No sound in games - but I do get sound in the menu...

I know there's a thread on reddit with a similar title, but it looks like that user was trying to get his sound to come from his audio jack. that's not my intention. I have a Pi setup in my home theater to use as a game console, so I need all sound to come through HDMI.
Ive tried all the different combos in ES's menu, I tried uncommenting #hdmi_drive=1 (or 2), I've tried alsamixer, and all that does is raise the volume in the menu but I still get dead silence in games (just about every emu/game I've tried).
I got perfect sound in my menu, but none in my games. What am I missing?

Please post some details about your setup, as requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.
Post the verbose log when running an emulator to pastebin.com to take a look.
