Hey, no cheating! The topic clearly says "games", no series. 😜

Really Tough, there are at least a dozen games that are on par with the following list of mine

        • Phoenix
        • Mappy
        • Elevator Action
        • Donkey Kong 3
        • Hyper Sports

And nowadays (thanks to the lockdown situation of late) that my Daughter really loves to play 'em CoOp, i am inclined to switch 4/5 with (as 1/2):

        • Bubble Bobble
        • Bubble Bobble II (Bubble Symphony)

@IanDaemon Thought I'd add my tuppence worth:

In the arcade back in the day I'd play in no particular order:

          Robotron
          Gauntlet
          Salamander
          Star Wars
          Outrun

On my bartop under mame I play:

          Robotron
          Nemesis/Gradius
          R-Type
          Salamander
Star Wars (on a dedicated cabinet with a yoke!)

I really enjoy danmaku/bullet hell arcade games and CAVE makes some of the best. Psikyo is my other favorite for arcade shmups. A whole lot of CAVE games (and danmaku games in general) were released on Xbox over the years.

I've discovered Cave since I've had my Pi. Really love their games. I've got most of them running well now, Ibara is the only one that is a bit slow still but it is playable all the same.

@IanDaemon If you install Mame2016 from source now you can underclock the games, which does give a performance boost (depending on how perfect you want things to be of course, but they become playable to a degree for sure). This was talked about here : retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/26807/deathsmiles-on-lr-mame2015-any-performance-tips

                  • DoDonPachi (best SHMUP ever (imo))
                  • Jackal / Top-Gunner (TopDown-Shooter with Jeep. Very playable)
                  • Paperboy
                  • Samurai Shodown II
                  • Galaga ´88

How does Jackal compare to the NES version? I had that as a kid and didn't realize it was an arcade game.

                  4B ~ RPi PSU 5.1V / 3.0A ~ 32GB SanDisk microSD ~ 128GB USB

                    @hooperre and i did not know that there is a NES-Version :)
So i cannot compare it, but i recommend to give the Arcade-Version a try, it is a great game IMO! I has got that special flow that makes you play it again and again ;)

@hooperre I thought Jackal was just an NES game. Maybe Nintendo of America pushed it or the arcade cabinets weren't released here?

Jackal is one of those games that's good with a rotating joystick to shoot in eight directions. It's kinda hard without it.

Well, i play it like "Commando", "Mercs", Shock Troopers" and so on, i shoot in the direction i walk.
Works pretty good imo, the game gets hard anyway, but i reach section 3 and have a nice highscore-list.
In example: this does not work with games like "Ikari Warriors" at all, i dont play them because of the missing rotating stick. Makes no fun at all.

MAME doesn't have rotary stick support for those games ?

I meant that I am missing a rotary stick :)
I only have Gamepads and ordinary Arcade-Sticks (HAPP-Parts) - no Rotary Joysticks.

fwiw, FBneo uses some "hack" to directly map rotate left/right shorcuts to L1/R1, it makes those games quite playable even without rotary stick

@barbudreadmon that´s kind of funny, i did that kind of hack by mapping the inputs for "spinner axis x+" and "spinner axis x-" to the shoulder buttons too in these, mainly SNK-, games :D
Yes, it does work ok, but i was not satisfied with this solution.
I never played with a real rotary stick, but i guess this might be the best experience.

@sirhenrythe5th I could throw grenades in front of me, but I could only shoot "up". If an enemy came from the side or the bottom I had to get below them to shoot them. :(

Shock Troopers 1 and 2 are both fantastic!

sure, you can map the inputs that way for every game meant to be played with a rotary stick.
i did that with these titles:

                                            • Ikari Warriors
                                            • Ikari Warriors III
                                            • Time Soldiers
                                            • Victory Road
                                            • Caliber 50
