Okay, results are the same if I mount using the emulator interface. With .hdi, I get the How Many Files? question. On some disk files I'm okay, but on Night Slave (Disk A) I get "no system files".
I still think it might be BIOS. @Folly can run Yume no Sei, and I am using the same ROM as him. I can't see that there would be much difference between our systems aside from BIOS.
I tried the HDD Mount option also. Shame that there are the rules around BIOS sharing, although I do understand why. Would be good to rule it out though.
Edit: and thank you both for your help on this so far.

@AdamBeGood Yeah I think you're right, it has to be Bios related.
Have you checked one of those retropie bios packs that's always lying around? You may get lucky. -

Edit: I've found these packs of which you speak, but still no matching checksum with you guys. If I see "How Many Files?" one more time, something is getting thrown! :p
I want to play PC98!
Tomorrow is another day (I'll probably start trying again in a moment).
-
@Folly Any chance you could see if you can get Thexder, Fire Hawk and Final Crisis to run on the PC88? I can't get them to start.

Only Final Crisis works. (3 disks, m3u file) (V2 Mode)(8Mhz)
Some of these games seem to require "V1H Mode", selected that, but still doesn't work.
-
@Folly I got final crisis to work in the end. There's two big problems. The health bar doesn't show up and some bullets aren't visible.
It seems like PC88 emulation might be more miss than hit.
I think I'll look into setting it up on my PC. -

-
@Folly Sure, but I wouldn't take my feedback too seriously, my PC is about as old as an actual PC88 ^^

Saw a few issues and commits on github.
So installed lr-quasi88 from source.
It adds a sub_cpu_mode . this has to be set to always use both CPU. in core option q88_sub_cpu_mode = "2"Fire Hawk will also start now !
NICE!
-
@Folly Why does installing it from source change anything??

It updates it with new features that are not yet in the binary.
-
@Folly Brilliant! Does it correct the invisible bullets on Final Crisis?
Edit : Those screenshots make me jealous. I love the look of PC88 games!

@Folly Sweet! How long did it take you to install from source? I'll have to do it tonight.
Just about five minutes.
I'm trying to get M88 started and it's a pain.
Speaking of, both M88 and Neko Project II come packaged with the appropriate BIOS. I'm wondering if that means we're all right to share them? @mitu
Ok, don't know that M88, I think. Will see later on.
Do you have a link of that thread. -
@Folly Which thread?

@Folly Which thread?
I was thinking there was a thread about M88.
Then I misunderstood.I reread it, I get it !

@Folly Haha okay well I've installed lr-quasi88 from source and I'm giving it a spin now. I'm really hoping Final Crisis run right, that game looks totally awesome.
I just love the graphical style of those old 8-bit PC games, they've got something a little special.
