@folly Well I'm now at my wit's end with this font issue. My BIOS files match yours exactly and I still can't get any text in games that use the japanese font.
Could it be a permissions issue? My BIOS are set to 0755 and I can't seem to be able to change that.

@zering On The Scheme, I Google translated the text and it mentioned speed. Changed my CPU from 8 to 4 MHz fixed it. :)
There seem to be better roms.
Mine is fully English and works in 4 and 8 Mhz.Catch up with you all later on.
Could you give the name of your ROM when you are able please? Maybe it is less graphically glitchy than mine also.

To be fair, mine are 0777 but I doubt that is the issue. You never know though! I SCP in from my PC and change permissions that way, but there is probably a better way.
-
@adambegood I don't think it is either. Japanese text displays properly in np2pi. But that core is a mess.
SCP won't let me change permissions, every time I edit them it resets back to 0755. But I'm probably doing it wrong. -

@adambegood WinSCP.

@adambegood WinSCP.
Logging in as Root or Pi?
I've got EVO working with English Translation, and Farland Story.
-
@adambegood As pi. How do i log in as root?
-
@Zering said in Old Japanese Computer Appreciation Thread:

I think you can only change as Root, but make sure you change back as that is where all my shiz came from.
Just change the login details. I forget the standard password but if you Google, it is totally standard. I don't think you need to change any settings before you do this.
Edit: or maybe the default is there is no password - sorry it has been so long! It is totally doable, we just need to work it out.
-
@adambegood I'll try once I come back from my grocery run.
I can't lie, this font issue is starting to aggravate me ^^

I feel your pain, mate. Try this root issue, which shouldn't take long and then see where you are.
I was going mad with my BIOS issue previously.
Go and punch a watermelon in the shop or something. :p
I would whack a font.bmp in there just in case also. You never know.
-
@adambegood I've tried both font files with no result. Which is why I'm looking into permissions. The whole issue reminds of me of how no matter which BIOS you tried they didn't have any effect. Maybe it's a similar problem.
-
Did Garudius '95 control okay for you? I can't move the ship yet, but maybe the issue will resolve itself. I find that sometimes my keyboard plays up (maybe to do with Num Lock).
-
@adambegood Why are you using a keyboard? Most of those games are designed to be played with a two button joypad. Same for most Japanese computers of the era.
It could be that Garudius 95 does not have any keyboard controls.

Well, the way I'm using my controller is by mapping arrow keys to it in Options. So if my keyboard doesn't work, my controller doesn't.
Should I be doing it another way?
I was just using keyboard as joypad wasn't a goer, I have to use numpad on some games which don't use arrow keys.
-
@adambegood I do believe there's an option to use a joypad in the retroarch menu for that core. At the bottom I think.
I don't know how your keyboard would work with that as I play exclusively with joypads. Keyboards... yuck ^^ -

Stop keyboard shaming me! I thought it was the only way I could play this.
Edit: on a different issue, I am scraping my games now. Such a nightmare.
-
@adambegood haha I'm not shaming you I just literally cannot play with a keyboard. I'm somewhat dispraxic and have extremely poor hand-eye coordination, so those massive chunks of plastic are just atrocious to me. It's more than half the reason I keep putting off all those awesome DOS games I am dying to play.
So what have you played on the PC98 so far?
Edit : I've logged in root via WinSCP, and still no luck, I can't change my permissions. Still no japanese text on PC98 games...

I'm just getting a few DOS games that have come to my mind (Fade To Black, Slipstream 5000).
I haven't played a lot, yet between tinkering and scraping but I intend to stop with that now and get to playing).
I have:
Belloncho Body Inspection (translated)
CRW Metal Jacket (translated)
Dragon Slayer I and II (untranslated)
Farland Story I - VI (translated)
Flame Zapper
Gandhara (not translated)
Garudius '95
Night Slave
Okunen Monogatari (aka EVO, which I thought was weird and fun on SNES - translated)
Popful Mail
Puyo Puto 1 and 2
Reserve and Reserve 1/2 (translated)
Rusty (translated)
Steam-heart's
The Black Onyx T(translated)
Touhou 2 and 5
Yu-No (untranslated)
Yugekitai - the RPG one and the fighting one (translated)I intend to actually play these now.
-
@adambegood the Touhou games all have translations!
And by the way I'm not sure if you know but the EVO game on Snes is actually a sequel to the PC98 game!
You'll probably be better off playing Dragon Slayer 1 and 2 on Saturn through the Falcom Classics release though, although for my money the best port if Xanadu is on the MSX1 with that Yuzo Koshiro score! -

I knew it was linked yep! I thought more a reimagining than a sequel.
I'm just playing the intro of Snatcher PC-88 for fun, it is pretty cool although actually playing it won't be possible without translation.
