Saves are still don't work ?
Sorry i don't know how stuff work in MacOs. To transfer my roms i use WinSCP (sftp/ftp client). Cyberduck it is a sftp/ftp client for MacOs that you can test, don't forget to enable ssh from raspi-config.

Resetting the ROM folders permissions should be enough. Do you have any other scripts that are running and would change the permissions on the ROM folders ?
Can you run, from the command line, the command

ls -ld /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/n64

and post the output ?

The permissions look fine, so there's no issue here. Are you Are you sure you're saving the game in-game or that the game has support for saves (controller pak saves maybe ?).
You can try a save state (Hotkey + R) and see if it's saved.

I was saving in game (Controller Pak).

I access it via both Finder and Cyberduck. It refuses to move data into the rom folder.

I have executed the above command for the parent (rom) folder, since the whole folder appears to be affected, which outputted the following result:
drwxr-xr-x 1 pi pi 40 Dec 30 16:19 /home/pi/RetroPie/roms

I wonder if your sdcard hasn't been corrupted/broken. When that happens, they can turn read-only, silently discarding any writes to it.
Can you insert it into your mac and (on the boot partition that will appear) try to create a file ?

I've removed the SD as mentioned, moved a text file into it via Finder (mac) without a problem. So the SD card appears to be fine.

@mitu I've just noticed at startup; one failed line at boot:

[FAILED] Failed to start dphys-swapfile - set up, mount/unmount, and delete a swap file. See 'systemctl status dphys-swapfile.service' for details.

Couls this be connected to the issue?

It may be - if the filesystem is read-only, creating a swap file would fail.

@mitu I think at this stage a clean reinstall is imminent. Your help and advice is very much appreciated though.
