      Model: Raspberry Pi 4B
      Power Adapter: Canakit Power Adapter
      Case: Canakit Case with fan

I recently just got a raspberry pi and installed Retropie over the Raspberry Pi OS but have had a few problems. When both trying to load roms to play and clicking any button on the menu to try to to do something such as retropie configuration, the screen turns black, briefly shows the home screen, and then takes me back to where I was before clicking the button. I have searched elsewhere to see if this was a common problem or not but could not find anything significant. Please let me know if there is a way to solve this.

@djwt64 Yes, as stated in the documentation:

The RetroPie SD image is built on top of Raspbian lite (Raspbian without the PIXEL desktop environment) RetroPie can also be installed on top of the full Raspbian but you can't run Retropie and PIXEL at the same time, you will need to logout of the PIXEL desktop environment in order to run emulationstation and the emulators RetroPie installs.

Running RetroPie from the desktop is not a supported configuration, if you wish to use the desktop, then you can start it from EmulationStation (not the other way around) as explained here.

@mitu thanks for the reply, my question is how do I log out of PIXEL if I have downloaded retropie on my desktop environment.Did I just do it wrong and will I have to start from scratch? Or is there a way that I can somehow access retropie without logging in to my account because this automatically happens when I turn on my raspberry pi.

Configure the autostart option in RetroPie-Setup so that EmulationStation starts automatically at boot - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/FAQ/#how-do-i-boot-to-the-desktop-or-kodi
