Advise Regarding High Scores in Donkey Kong
-
Ok, been over the forum and there are articles that match aspects of my question but don't directly address so new post.....
Scenario: Donkey Kong will only run in fb-neo or mame2016. I've tried 2013, 2013+ and 2010. No go. The problem is that in fb-neo not all the sounds work (like Mario running and jumping) while DK grunting and music does work. In mame 2016 all sounds work BUT.... high scores don't save.
I suspect that scores are not saving in 2016 because DK did not have nvram and fb-neo is using the high scores file....
So.... just thought I'd float it out there.... anyone have DK workingwith all sounds and high scores? If so I'd appreciate advise on your config.
Retropie 4 / Pi 4 / 4gb mem
Thanks!

@churchill7 Sounds like you just don't have your roms matched to your emulator. I play DK in lr-mame2013 fully functionally and with all sound. (DK requires samples, so if you don't have them then you will be missing sounds). My high scores are there without issue, too.

That's because you are missing the right sample file, or maybe don't have a sample file at all
-
@churchill7 I can't comment on the high scores, but I just tested (exactly the same*) Donkey Kong rom in lr-fbneo and lr-mame2003-plus, and the game played fine, and with the sounds that I expected. (Walking is a sort of bleep-squeak noise - is that right?)
Have you added sound samples for the game?
(*it's a bit of a coincidence that the same ROM happens to be used in both emulators - normally I'd take the ROM from a matched romset)
-
@busywait I was so focussed on the high scores (being the issue I was trying to solve) I did not think to just troubleshoot the samples. A little web searching regarding missing audio and there ya go. Thanks for giving me a new direction
For the benefit of others that come across this looking for a solution :
Seek out your samples (in my case dkong.zip with the right audio files) and drop them in
/home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/fbneo/samples/
Provided that you are using fb-neo. Since fb-neo saves high scores this fully solves my issue anyway

It looks like the game never got redumped, which indeed makes the previous statement about the game not running on mame versions below 2016 very weird.

@barbudreadmon I was kind of confused on that point too. 2016 works but 2010, 2013 etc no go. Oh well. It works now so I am going to call it good
-
@churchill7 - Good that it's working - enjoy. For info, I just used lr-mame2003-plus to put myself in second position on the hiscores, and it was remembered (quit, start again, there's my name).
@barbudreadmon - There's a couple of minor differences between DK on fbneo and mame2003-plus:
- The sounds are a little harsher in fbneo (more high-frequency?)
- The girders are more pink in fbneo
Is either emulator more correct? One is a little easier on the ears :D
-
@busywait The 'pink' color is considered the 'correct' color. It was corrected relatively recently. mame2003 is basically red and is what the game looked like before the color correction in recent drivers. (I like the red better...)

The sound in FBNeo should be accurate (one of our devs has access to the cabinet). Make sure you are using the right sample file for each emulator, iirc MAME need sample files with the matching samplerates, while that shouldn't be a major problem (apart maybe quality loss) for FBNeo which will convert at runtime if it doesn't match the expected samplerate. You might also want to play around with sound settings in FBNeo's core options if you don't like the default (requires restart). Btw, i'm using that sample with dkong on FBNeo (it's not copyrighted content afaik so it should be ok to share).

FBNeo has the right colors (iirc the pink is not the only difference), it was fixed around 2011 in MAME and backported to FBAlpha in 2018.
