      Seems your issue is similar to this one, solved with an updated ROM file. I suggest you re-download the game from https://buildbot.libretro.com/assets/cores/Handheld Electronic Game/ and retry.

      @ianf Bad ROM dump? I dunno. Bad connection at the time? That's the problem with downloading from random websites. You don't really know what you have.

      The sound in FBNeo should be accurate (one of our devs has access to the cabinet). Make sure you are using the right sample file for each emulator, iirc MAME need sample files with the matching samplerates, while that shouldn't be a major problem (apart maybe quality loss) for FBNeo which will convert at runtime if it doesn't match the expected samplerate. You might also want to play around with sound settings in FBNeo's core options if you don't like the default (requires restart). Btw, i'm using that sample with dkong on FBNeo (it's not copyrighted content afaik so it should be ok to share).

      FBNeo has the right colors (iirc the pink is not the only difference), it was fixed around 2011 in MAME and backported to FBAlpha in 2018.

      Donkey Kong is one of a few old MAME ROMs that is known to require a "samples" file. The samples file includes the sounds for Jumpman walking & jumping, Donkey Kong stomping in the beginning, etc.

      In the folder structure you can place this a ZIP file which includes these sounds. Do not unzip the file, this screenshot just shows you the path and the contents of the zip file:

      If you're curious a list of six MAME2003 ROMs are known to require a "samples" file. There may be more, but these six are Berzerk, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Mario Bros., Q*Bert, and Track & Field:

      As someone mentioned before, MAME is picky on file names.

      That's the file share name, not the folder name as seen by the Pi.

      For some reason there were only 3 wav files inside that zip.

      You probably swapped your samples file with your roms file.

      Might as well mention it even if some people prefer it that way or don't care : dkong colors are wrong in mame2003, as an example the red stages are supposed to be pink like this :
      dkong real colors

      If you are interested in getting the game to run with real colors, they are fixed in the recent mame cores (2015 onwards) and the FBNeo core.

      @bluesparkle that's interesting - I thought it was just all the spring stages in sequence starting from a high levle, not the same one over and over. it does seem like it would be easierand quicker to use a savestate in that case.

      Even the current version of MAME requires a good number of samples but Donkey Kong was fully emulated (no samples required) with version 0.116 and mame2014 is based off of version 0.159 so that's kind of interesting.

      I found out that the issue I am having corresponds with the fba emulator that I am trying to use. Switching to Mame2003, the game will work and the scores will save, but the gameplay is superior on fba so I want to get that working.

      My retropie is set in accordance with the following link:

      The "game.hi" file is being created in the correct place so I am still not sure what is going on

      @thedeathstar It certainly isn't the point to keep going over the same material again and again no. It may have been better to perhaps say "Please read the arcade documentation." though - which is what herb really meant.

      It's frustrating because people don't even bother to read the information on registering - users are asked to agree to read the sticky topic then, and they don't. We only ask that users try to help themselves first a little - so our time can be used more efficiently.

      @trixta never even heard of it. But as above. No source. No port. The dev has ported it to ouya you could request he port it the raspberry pi.
