Bluetooth controller pairing fails at security mode selection (UI freeze)

Hi,

Scratching my head on this one so hope someone can help.

New pi 4
Fresh image of retropie: retropie-buster-4.7.1-rpi4_400
New 8bitdo sn30 pro+ with firmware updated to 5.0

Running through the steps here: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/8Bitdo-Controller/

All works fine until the security mode select screen.

At this point, on selecting any of the options, the UI locks.

(Inputs from the keyboard or USB controller then register as text at the bottom of the screen but with no other response)

Anyone have idea what the issue might be?
