Apologies for my ignorance, this is all new to me. Ages ago I bought an arcade controller with the hopes of making a cabinet. It never happened, but I just got a raspberry Pi 4 4GB machine and a preconfigured SD card with RetroPi 4.7.11 on it.

My arcade controller has a one player setup on the left (joystick and buttons), a duplicate 2nd player setup on the right and a trackball with buttons between them. To my knowledge the unit is setup like a MAME/IPAC keyboard, sadly the company I bought it from a while ago is no longer in business. I cannot configure the player 2 controls. I've used the retroarch menus to add the 2nd player button configs but I get a "can't save config" error everytime I do that. I've exhausted all the options I'm familiar with, the gentleman that configured my SD is unfamiliar and I thought maybe someone here could help point me in the right direction to troubleshoot this?

Install RetroPie from scratch and not from some pre-configured 3rd party.
There's a nice page explaining how to configure IPAC controllers at https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Keyboard-Controllers/#configuration-example-ipac, you may want to take a look there after you start fresh.

@mitu Thank you very much I will look into that. Maybe third party was the wrong term? It was a preconfigured card. I'm not familiar with installing retropie and having it "play nicely" with retroarch and emulation station, that's why I went that route. I'd rather not take that drastic a step but if I could alter a few config files that's more in my wheelhouse.

Maybe another silly question but I've read other threads about emulation station configuring as gamepad vs keyboard. Would changing something like that help?

There's no explicit setting in EmulationStation for that, however there is one for the IPAC and it's referenced in the doc page I linked earlier.
