Can't Connect to My Network

Hello again:

After not getting any response to my problems setting up a PS3 controller. I decided to start over from scratch.
I reflashed my retropie image. However, I can not do a blessed thing because I can not connect to my network - a wpa2 personal network with 2.4 and 5 GHz - both named the same thing for file sharing purposes. I have previously connected to this network with retropie, recalbox and and raspberry pi os on the same RPi 4B.

So I far I have tried:

• Setting up the wifi when I flash the image through Raspberry Pi imager V1.6.1. (CTRL+SHIFT+ X) - strike 1
• Setting up the wifi through the raspi-config script, found in the retropie configuration - strike 2
• Setting up the wifi through wifi utility found in the retropie configuration - strike 3
• Manually creating a /etc/network/interfaces file as per these instructions for WPA/WPA2 - strike 4

Each attempt is on a fresh install of retropie, I always input my country code and I only use the preconfigured network when I flash with the first method.

What is going wrong here? Am I just not meant to use retropie?

edit 1: Just out of interest I flashed the same card with raspberry pi os and the preconfigured wifi described in the first method. It set up the network and it worked fine. So the problem does not appear to be hardware or raspberry pi os based.

edit 3: 1 thing I did notice is the retropie had its date set to early Aug 2020 - I have reset the date to today.

@dsquared when you go to the retropie menu and select wifi. Can you find your network on the list under "connect to wifi network"?

Even if you can't get it to connect you should be able to see the signal.

Did you set WLAN Country under localization settings? That kind-of-very-important step seems to be somewhat buried in the official documentation, if I remember.

(Nevermind that's probably what you meant by "always set my country code.")

You should also be sure you set your keyboard, as the default is to UK and some of the symbols that may be needed for complex passwords are on very different keys. If you are in the U.S., for example, you would want to choose a US keyboard layout.

Q 1) Even if you can't get it to connect you should be able to see the signal.

A 1) yes I can see my network when I use method #4

A 3) The characters involved are just letters and numbers.I do 2 things before messing with the network:

• Increase the console font
• change the keyboard to US, if I haven't used the first method. this involves editing the /etc/default/keyboard and the /etc/locale.gen because the script/tool doesn't work.

Ok. So at least the hardware seems to be working since it's finding the network.

Have you tried connecting to another open wifi network? To ensure the issue is not with your home wifi / router / modem, etc?

Sorry I do not have any other open wifi connections. (neighbours all have theirs' secured) Given that I could connect previously with retropie and today connected with my RPI 4B & Raspberry Pi OS. However, I am going to see if I can set up an open network with my phone and will report back.

OK I fixed it! I went bleeding edge & downloaded retropie-buster-4.7.12-rpi4_400.img.gz and for whatever reason I was able to connect using the raspi-config script - I just entered my county code, SSID & password. So from my vantage point something got tweaked (eeprom update?) in the network setup routines in V4.7.1 - because it was working several months ago....
