Controls randomly locked for 1 or 2 secs

@niktus81 I feared running into problems with the 3.5mm jack so I have the HDMI cable running into a device that separates the audio and video signals. I send the video to a television and the audio to an amp.

I didn't see this post, but also just posted about what sounds like a very similar issue I'm having. It seems to be most common for me with analog sticks in N64, but may also be a general system issue like you're mentioning. Same timing where it started with the latest big retropi update.

I also use audio output to my 3.5 jack as well since I use a CRT and an amplifier hooked up to speakers. I can try to switch to HDMI audio tomorrow and see if that does anything.

Well this was it! I went into raspi-config and switched to HDMI audio and it COMPLETELY SOLVED THIS PROBLEM. Who would have thought that an audio setting would somehow make controllers stop working for a few seconds.

@toigo I found it by an accident. After last big system update, I've noticed that my audio was off. It seemed that the update changed my audio to HDMI settings. As soon as I switched the audio settings back to the 3.5 jack, the issue with the controller started. I switched again to HDMI and the problem was solved. I guess some firmware update causes this issue, but I am not an expert. Glad it was solved, but it seems that the 3.5 jack on the pi is unusable for me now.

I did not have the time to do some tests like you people did, but it is good to know what it seems the root cause for this problem.
Amazing that a simple thing as an electric audio signal can have this kind of impact.
As I´m using an old 19 LCD square monitor and a power amplifier for the sound, HDMI is not in my universe right now, so I´m stuck here.Really hope for some kind of firmware update to solve this issue.

Solution confirmed, found a way to extract audio signal from HDMI cable, never again a freeze with controllers ... hope that the problem with 3.5 is solved anyway at some point

well i buy from ebay a converter but i have no audio output....try some sound option but no luck.
converter works with other hdmi like tv

I also do have this problem with an up-to-date Retropie 4.7 on my Pi 4. Since I had a similar hdmi converter lying around, it became my provisional solution for now.
Let's hope that future updates of Raspberry Pi OS will fix this issue someday.

Strangely, on my system only the other hdmi port away from the power plug has video and sound. 😛

been going crazy trying to fix this issue. got another microsd card and imaged it to see if that fixed it. Nothing would work. Switched from a monitor to TV and changed to HDMI for audio and it fixed the issue.

Just to confirm i got it right:
as soon as you use the 3,5" jack for audio you run into these problems with USB-Controllers?
So the Pi2Scart Device is also useless as it uses the 3,5"-Jack to get the audio-signal? -

Gosh, the Pi4 is a great piece of hardware, no doubt!
But it is PITA for anyone trying to get the beast connected to a CRT compared to the Pi1 to 3 :/ -
