Games not loading

I've tried to look for the issue I'm having but I can't seem to find an answer. I am very very new to this. I only started my raspberry pi 4 up about four days ago. I finally got things running today. I have raspberry pi OS running off of a SSD. That works fine. I downloaded and ran Retropie. That works fine. I had downloaded a few games to test them out. They worked fine. But now I added some more games and whenever I go to stat one it blanks out to the Raspberry Pi desktop for about 2 three seconds and then goes back into Retropie at the game list. Nothing pops up saying there was an error and I have no Idea how to look for errors. The only thing I can think of that I might have done is messed up the BIOS files because I added some new files. I understand I sound stupid about this but I'm really stuck at this point and have no idea what to do. I really don't want to have to uninstall and do it all over again. Any help would be appreciated and if I'm doing this post wrong I do apologize.

@jonnyman Wrong emulator for ROM? Without more information it's impossible to say for sure, but downloading random ROMs leads to frustration. You can try every emulator you have one-by-one. Maybe the games you downloaded aren't supported by anything on the Pi.

Doesn't Retropie come with emulators already attached? I just moved the ROMs I had into their respected folders and it worked initially but when I moved a lot more games over is when I had the issue. Is there any way to redownload the base BIOS files for Retropie or do I need to just start over?Edit: It's not just the roms that don't load. In the Retropie system menu, any time I try a menu option it fades out, show the Raspberry Pi desktop and then goes straight back to the menu. Something isn't letting Retropie start up anything I try. Retropie loads up no problem and I can navigate the menu's fine but nothing works now.

Launch one of the non-working titles with verbose logging enabled. Fetch the log file at
/dev/shm/runcommand.log
; upload it on pastebin.com, and post the link here. -
Ok so I got the games to work. I had made a shortcut on the Raspberry Pi desktop to launch emulationstation. It launches it but then the games don't work. If I open up the terminal and manually type it in then the games work. Am I doing it wrong or is that the right way?

That's because running EmulationStation from the desktop is not a supported configuration - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Manual-Installation/#install-raspbian:
The RetroPie SD image is built on top of Raspbian lite (Raspbian without the PIXEL desktop environment) RetroPie can also be installed on top of the full Raspbian but you can't run Retropie and PIXEL at the same time, you will need to logout of the PIXEL desktop environment in order to run emulationstation and the emulators RetroPie installs.

You guys have to understand that I know zero to nothing about what I'm doing. At the moment things are working, maybe not at their best, but they are working. I appreciate the help and I'll keep looking into how I can maybe improve my situation.

That's ok, everybody starts somewhere. The Docs are a pretty good source of information and if there's something that you can't find there, then feel free to ask here, in the forums.

@jonnyman if you're new to all of this i would recommend starting from the retropie image which has a much easier installation process and less room for error: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/First-Installation/.
and please supply all the information requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first when seeking support.
