Upgrade to new 4.8 release advise please.
-
I am using 4.71 and have upgraded the retropie setup script and it shows 4.8 now and i've also updated most of the packages.
Everything is working well for me but I am wondering is there better advantages to upgrade with a fresh install of 4.8
Thanks

SimOn my Pi4 retropie setup i had update my retropie-setup script about 48 hours ago.
Infact i have received a lot of upgrade also on OS side.The previous stable image 4.7.1 it was nearly a year old (maybe even two years) so if you usually maintain upgraded your retropie setup like whit weekly or monthly check i thinks you can't advise very great advantages or disadvantages.
On my side i have read only a strange things........ i see on changelogs this:
EmulationStation updated to v2.10.2
I have updated my script about 5 minutes ago so to update the version to 4.8 but on my side i don't have obtain this neweset emulation 2.10.2........... i have again the 2.10.1 also after a completely system reboot.
maybe something they forgot to update.....

Upgrading from a 4.7.1 image to 4.8 should be ok, there may be some minor defaults that are better with a clean install (RetroArch's RGUI), but other than that you're all set.

@Simrose I aswell didn't get EmulationStation updated to v2.10.2. Still howing 2.10.1.
-
Emulation station will be updated in about 10mins along with some other binary updates that didn't get uploaded in the last run.
-
@BuZz Am I doing another full on update or just updating the retropiescript and emulation station?
-
@Refazeshot1 up to you. either will be fine.
-
@BuZz Did the trick! Thank ya. The menu is a lot snappier, perfect.

@mitu
Thanks for advise.Would you know if after using the retropie update setup script then updating all core and main packages if I would benefit still from all the changes listed on the website below.

Yes, of course. That's how updates work.

Not done an update before, mainly stuck to full installs when the package changes - Jessie to Buster etc - I have the latest 4.7.1 version running at the moment. My question is probably one that is a bit simple, but if i was to upgrade to 4.8, would it be via the set up menu, and would it overwrite the roms folder effectively getting rid of all my precious games/scrapes/configs and settings??
Thanks in advance

@Impman66 You should check the documentation. It won't remove anything. https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Updating-RetroPie/

just for interest: why is Retroarchs RGUI better with a clean install?

How does yours looks like ?
-
@mitu the default one, i never changed the colors or used the GUI-Options like starfield in background etc.
I guess i dont know what you mean at all :D
First i thought it is concerned to the new "dynamic RGUI", but this has just been available in 1.10.1 and AFAIR Retroarch got updated to 1.10.0 in Retropie-Setup 4.8.
So i dont understand why the RGUI should be better/different with a clean install than with just updating it from an existing 4.7.x? -

If you didn't change it through the conf, then upgrading in place would get you the same thing. I'm referring to the checkered-box pattern being disabled and font shadow (the new defaults).

@mitu Ahhhh, ok, thank you very much, now i got it! :)
