@raspberry79 i dont understand your way of thinking:
you did everything to prevent an update in the Retropie-Setup ("it asks me if i want to update the underlying OS & Kernel. i laways say "no"!), but want to do an update via the terminal?

The things you could upgrade via the terminal are the same that are updated if you just choose "update all packages" in the Retropie-Setup.
What do you think would be different by updating by terminal-commands?

I got through on setting retropie up, apparently i was getting a error from the controller that i was using, an off brand name that i never heard of.
So now that retropie is going.

I was reading online about how to do a firmware upgrade on the raspberry Pi 4. So, can i access the terminal window in retropie to upgrade the Pi 4 firmware

@raspberry79 updating the OS (ie, via RetroPie-Setup) also updates the firmware. no need to do anything else.

                from your link:

To do this type sudo apt update

this is essentially exactly what retropie's scripts do when you update underlying OS. retropie is effectively a bunch of scripts that automate the running of terminal commands, so you shouldn't need to manually do them too often :)
