Hey! I'm really new to this and don't have any experience with using Terminal etc. I'm trying to set up an NES system on a Raspberry Pi 4. I'm using Raspberry Pi Imager v1.8.3 to flash retropie 4.8 onto my micro SD card.

I initially used the 32gb card (Samsung) that Canakit supplied and this morning I bought a 128gb Sandisk. Both give me the same message when booting up

end Kernal panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

I've read about corrupt cards, but both these cards are brand new. Please help!

Are you using a proper power supply for the Pi4 ? Is this a new Pi4 board ? What devices did you connect to the Pi - mouse, keyboard, gamepad, etc. ?

If the cards are new and - seemingly - ok, then the problem may be with the power supply or the board. You can use the Imager to write the latest RaspiOS Lite image and see if with that image the system completes the 1st boot.
