To induce my newfound addiction for the Fallout Franchise, and coupled with the love for old retro Games, I tried too many futile attempts at playing Fallout 2 on Retropie, but as its said in the title, it always failed. It all started after installing Fallout 1 as a DOS game for the DosBox Pure version, but I was not interested in the storyline of the first fallout game, because it was dark due to the FEV virus storyline (unpopular opinion), so I tried to find ways playing Fallout 2. This game has no DOS version, but it does play on the windows 95/98 OS, and knowing that dosbox can run the win 95 os, i tried to install it, but ran at a couple of fatal roadblocks, which caused me to reinstall the os with every attempt. I followed the tutorial here:

add replicated it in Retropie, but all hope was lost on 2 bugs. One was the missing Disk problem which isn't solved in the video, and the "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" problem which stops the installation of the Direct X 8.0 program. I tried it on the Retroarch version on Windows, and it worked flawlessly, but the "illegal" problem kept on breaking the installation of any Direct X version from 3 to 8 on the Pi. The reason why i need to install Direct X is because when I open Fallout 2, it says that it needs Direct X 3 or above. Also I am running it on an Rpi 3b+ so there is that. Thanks for the replies

RetroPie-Extra repo has a script for Fallout 2 that you can try. Maybe it is more simple to play it with this way: https://github.com/Exarkuniv/RetroPie-Extra/tree/master

@abj Crashed when I tried playing the fallout 2 in the port, just after installation, also after adding critter and master files, it loaded to "Please Stand By", but it crashed again, probably because im using an Rpi 3b+ without x86 support, correct me if im wrong

@Fenderus wine has nothing to do with that port.

It probably just won't work on a pi3. Sorry I never tested it on a pi3.

@shavecat Tried Installing Box 86 and Wine 86, but failed due to my mk arcade joystick failing to load after some kind of installation of Wine, I posted the issue: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/35483/wine-broke-mk-arcade-joystick-rpi-package-for-retropie-rpi3b

@Fenderus Now it is possible to maybe have it working. since it does install fine, and also start.

so at that point it is something with the software itself and something that the dev of it might be able to fix.

if you want you can post the issue here and see what he says.

unfortunately it will be while before i can setup my pi3 for testing (its my current Retorpie build)

@ExarKunIv I installed a similar build known as Falltergeist: https://github.com/falltergeist/falltergeist suggested here: https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?p=2222634#p2222634

Like your suggestion, the program crashed and exited after the Please Wait screen, but I have found a clue as to what's going on because I opened it using the terminal.
Assuming this is the build that the Retropie-Extra uses, the error is:

                      * failed to add service - already in use?

@ExarKunIv Also I just found out that switching to vc4-fkms-v3d makes fallout 2 work, but cant open Retropie, and it directs itself to the console. See here: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/35493/i-need-vc4-fkms-v3d-to-run-fallout-2-but-at-the-cost-of-emulation-station-not-running

@Fenderus I can't remember the exact process but if I remember rightly you can rebuild emulationstation with vc4-fkms-v3d driver support. Although I think I did that with a pi zero 2w so not sure bout the pi 3b

Retroflag GPI with raspberry pi zero 2 w/ wifi

Maybe I can make a port sh script that can add the line:

                                  dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d

to the /boot/config.txt file and then reboot the system then add some commands to the etc/rc.local to go to the Fallout 2 Directory and launch Fallout 2. Is there a way for that?

@retropieuser555 Did as what you said and it worked! After a few big tweaks. First I added the vc4-fkms-v3d line to the config file, then after reboot, I updated emulation station and retroarch using the Retropie Setup Script, and they booted up normally, with some lagging issues, but nothing to worry about. After that, I booted @abj solution, and it worked! I just now have to translate the joystick controls since it is a port after all. Thanks.

But now, it cannot save. I'm running it on the lxde desktop because I couldn't run any program that can turn a controller's joystick into a mouse in a port game
