Hello! I have never been able to use my USB keyboard as a controller in any emulator other than MAME. I was doing some research and I realised that Retroarch doesn't have any cores installed, and that that might be the problem. Also, in the Retroarch menu I couldn't find any options to install any. Could someone help?

I also tried "Install all cores" from the Retropie setup menu, but there still aren't any cores available in Retroarch

        Solved:
"If you do not see the "Core Downloader" option, you may have installed RetroArch using a package manager. If so, see Installing cores through package manager (Ubuntu PPA only). Otherwise, to enable it:

        Navigate to Settings
        Navigate to User Interface
        Navigate to Menu Item Visibility
        Enable Show Core Downloader"

        Copied from https://docs.libretro.com/guides/download-cores/

RetroPie doesn't have a 'standard' RetroArch installation w.r.t. cores. Cores are managed manually from RetroPie setup and they're automatically set to be started depending on the system where the ROM/game is located. You don't need to start RetroArch and then open a core/content like you'd normalluy do on a bare RetroArch installation, instead you launch the game/ROM directly from EmulationStation.

As for the original question - did you configure your keyboard in EmulationStation - as an input/controller ? It should automatically configure the keyboard for RetroArch also.
