Berzerk (STERN 1980) - MAME missed sound issues
-
Wondering if anyone has found a way to get Berzerk sounding right in MAME? I find MAME 2003 with samples sounds great unless you actually look at what's happening on screen. Lots of shots and explosions just don't sound if there's much going on.
I'm struggling to find a way to get around this. I've also seen FPGA Berzerk working, and that doesn't sound right either.
Any help appreciated. MAME 2010 doens't seem to sort the issue out.

Don't expect decade(s) old versions of MAME to run games accurately.
MAME (no vintage), FBNeo and MAME2003-plus are your goto emulators if you are looking for emulation with as much fixes as possible. -
@barbudreadmon Thanks. I'll try a bit more.

@OneSwitch Hi. It's been an issue for MAME for many years. More recent version of the PC version are very good. In fact, Gorf, Stratovox and BerZerk are very close to actual at this point. It was a difficult conversion for many years because of the separate discrete circuits that were originally used to "generate" the voices. It's always hoped that an emulator will be an exact, but it's just a lot to ask for considering the emulator is using software to simulate original solid state circuitry. The MAME2003_plus is very good, you can also try lr-mame2015/16 which use MAME .160 and MAME .174 ROM sets as the core. They are about as close as it's going to get until another version is coded that has the modern updates of recent MAME versions for use on a Pi.

The current sound speech emulation only dates back from 0.170, and as a general rule i strongly recommend users to avoid libretro cores that were shallowly ported then left to rot.

I'm very much aware of what the issues of MAME are hence why I specifically said..
"They are about as close as it's going to get until another version is coded that has the modern updates of recent MAME versions for use on a Pi."
Or did you miss that?
Also... I appreciate the efforts of those that at least tried to make a useable libretro version for us to use for free. I'd rather have what we have, than have nothing at all.
I've built 5 MAME cabinets and all of them use PC based MAME versions because of the issues that Retropie has emulating MAME. I'm very hopeful someone will pick it up again and continue with a new version, but until that happens, all of my 4 RetroPi units use libretro, MAME and FBNeo...whichever works best for the library of specific ROMs I have installed.

And i was pointing out that mame2016 has those modern updates while mame2015 hasn't. Did you miss that ?
Yet again there is absolutely no reason to use mame2015/mame2016 when latest mame is available, better integrated with the libretro api, and will perform just as fast most of the time.
