Games won't "launch". Menu fades to black then reappears.

(SOLVED)
Hello,
I installed the RetroPie image on micro SD a flash drive, using the Raspberry Pi Imager. My RPI is v4 so i selected the appropriate RetroPie image during the imager flash drive installation wizard.
To install roms I downloaded them and copied them to the appropriate folder using the network (not the usb method).
I powered on the rpi and it booted up RetroPie, configuration of the Logitech F710 was smooth. Everything seemed to be in order.
But, when I try to launch a game, no game would launch. The menu fades away (as if the game is about to start) and then just fades back in and reappears. I don't actually see the game being started at all. I tried to look for the "/dev/shm/runcommand.log" file but it didn't exist.
I tried about 5 different roms, for different systems, from different sources (including the r/ROMS megathread). I am certain the ROMs are not the issue here, as I have succesfully run these roms on emulators before.
Please help, my daughter is really looking forward to trying some Super Mario :D

This looks like a bad ROM file. Please add more info about your setup and game/emulator used, as asked in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.

@mitu Thanks for the reply, but after I did a update (via the emulationstation GUI) everything works as expected.
In summary I followed the official guide exactly but I still had to run an update to actually be able to launch ROMS. Perhaps updating retropie should be a step in the official guide.
Topic solved :)

If you have installed manually, then you're already using the latest version. If you installed from an image, since it's already configured with the right emulators.
You haven't mentioned how you installed your system and what games you've run, etc. in order to be able to diagnose why launching a game didn't work the first time. Sure, it seems that 'updating' has solved the issue, but there might be something else entirely.

@mitu Thanks for your reply.
So to clarify:
I created the bootable flash drive using the official "Raspberry Pi Imager" tool. From the menu there I selected the RetroPie image to be installed on the flash drive.
I tried several different games, and I even tried running one of the ROMS (super mario bros. 3) on a different (older version) installation of retropie and the ROM worked. So I was confident the ROMs were not the issue here.
I edited my original post to add these details.
I'm hoping that even though the issue is resolved this topic can remain on the forums so others perhaps in the same situation as me can find it when troubleshooting.
