@Jiryn said in 3DO, MAME and FB NEO Question:

      What library is MAME CURRENT?
      Is it an optional package?

      Experimental, I think.

3DO -> runs great (on a Pi5, which you have)

seperate Systems in ES -> your arcade-roms are in the directory /home/pi/retropie/roms/arcade/"
Move the roms to ".../roms/fbneo/" and ".../roms/mame/" to make these systems(names) show up in ES.

...don't exist in default RetroPie. Try fba and mame-libretro folders if you want that separation.

I am going to explain this better, and hopefully easier to understand.
I don't remember what folder I had them in, but the libraries WERE Separated

However, when in the UI selecting the system it had two libraries, both named ARCADE so I was never sure if I was in FBNEO or MAME2010's library.

I mean what's the name and what's the rom type?
          0.276?
          How well does it run?

            According to https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/29682/development-of-module-script-generator-for-lr-mess-lr-mame-and-mame-standalone/2221, yes.

Undoubtedly faster than mame2010 for carnevil, MAME introduced multiple arm64 dynarecs in 0.274, making it ~4 times faster than it used to be for the games using those dynarecs, which includes carnevil and most of the demanding games.
I might recommend the standalone version though, i've seen mixed reviews about those dynarecs in the libretro port.

As explained in the docs, it installs the latest monthly release for MAME - at this time it's indeed 0.276.

However, when in the UI selecting the system it had two libraries, both named ARCADE so I was never sure if I was in FBNEO or MAME2010's library.

FBA has it's own icon, different than arcade, so you probably didn't use it before. You can start using it now, if you wish to have fbneo as a separate system, though most of the ROMs are identical with MAMEs.

@mitu probably used the arcade folder before..
It's been a few years, but I remember being confused AF.

                Thank you!

Now I just need to find the romset.
It should be the same # right?

Sorry, this part always bugged me, that there are so many sets.

Wait, am I over thinking ROMSETS?
I always thought ROMS in newer sets were newer ROMS, made to take advantage of the advancements and updates in MAME code.
or are they the same ROM?

(Aka like can I use the 2003 or 2010 romset with current MAME?)

No, new ROMs are not 'created' to take advantage of new MAME code.

(Aka like can I use the 2003 or 2010 romset with current MAME?)

                    No.

This question has been answered countless times and and it's pretty well documented. Get the ROMSET for the emulator version you have and - optionally - validate it against the .dat file(s) produced by the emulator with a ROM validation tool like ClrMamePro/ROMluator/Romcenter/etc.

                      WELP that famously didn't work.
Spent the last couple days downloading a terabyte of data, all the roms, chds and BIOS to run MAME .276 on the PI..

I could hear sounds, but graphically it was a gabled mess that looked like colored static with nothing distinct.
Tried older games like Sunset Riders, Golden Axe, and some System 32 games.. had sound but no the image was the same static mess. (Literally looked like a static screen but in various colors)

FBNeo seems to run System 32 amazingly now..
Anything I need the MAMES for now? Beyond 3D games which you're right, would be an issue (Someone showed a few of them working fine a few months back, which is why I asked)

did you test both standalone and the libretro core ?

                          Just the standard...
I should have tried to libreto core, but worried it wouldn't perform well either.

@Jiryn either way, you should probably seek help in the topic dedicated to mame current i previously linked.
