Why is FCEUmm the default NES emulator, and further, why is Nestopia on the "optional" cores list instead of the main list?

I ask because I cannot discern a performance difference between the two, but when it comes to emulation accuracy, they're night and day, and FCEUmm is the big loser on that score. I was just comparing the difference between a major classic on the two: Castlevania. Not only does Nestopia sound much better (just like the game originally did), but there is no cropping. On FCEUmm, "SCORE" says "CORE", "PLAYER" says "LAYER", etc. And the sound is weak and tinny. This is but one example. There are many more.

Nestopia (IMHO) really should be the default NES emulator for Pi 2/3 setups. At the very least, it should be a main core and not an optional one.

@Lyle_JP yes fceumm crops every single game and nestopia fixed the aspect ratio. Just speculation but fceumm might possibly be the default because it supports retro achievements. Fceumm does not support the high score save feature in mike tysons punchout for playchoice 10 so it crashes after the first win. As far as vs. games its support is good graphically but the controls dont work in a lot of games so you can get a coin in and get a game to a menu screen but cant do anything after that.

@Lyle_JP you can fix the cropping issue. video_crop_overscan = false. maybe it should be default, i don't know.

nestopia has performance issues on pi2, 1 and zero afaik. perhaps nestopia could be default on pi3.

thanks, I thought this was emulator specific.

@detron it is. or at least, you probably don't want to change it for every emulator. you can use the config editor to change per-system settings (nes etc)

@detron probably in /opt/retropie/configs/nes/retroarch.cfg and /opt/retropie/configs/fds/retroarch.cfg if you want to do it manually

It's not about respect. It was just down to the way the defaults were chosen and how I assigned packages when I moved to the more modular install. I don't have a problem moving it to the main packages, but I don't want to change the emulator defaults now. Trust me - people will complain.

One things I have noticed when working on RetroPie is complaints come first, and that one person's opinion is more important than everyone else's when they have a problem. I make decisions based on what I think is best at the time - and try to make choices that will suit most people (based on feedback) - but it's not possible to always please everyone.

Things like video smoothing, which now defaults to off. We still get people complaining about this, but we had complaints before when it was on.

@BuZz I'm not trying to suggest that my opinion is more important than anybody's. I was just baffled as to why the only NES emulator installed by default in Retropie was a buggy and inaccurate one, and a really solid emu was only available if you went hunting for it.

I understand why you are reluctant to change defaults, and I can appreciate it.

I wasn't talking about you specifically, but in general - when something doesn't work right people are often quite vocal and their preference comes first :-)

Nestopia has been moved to the main package section.

As for me and using both, both star tropic games don't work on nestopia.. Also I've had issues running some Japanese games like Holy diver and gradius II. Games that run just fine on fecumm. From a beginner point of view, I would say fecumm runs more games. It may be inaccurate, and some games may not run just like a real nes, but it's run all I've thrown at it without a hitch. I just wish nestopia would have a separate turbo buttons. Makes playing mega man soooooooo much playable.

@dankcushions i edited my config files and fceumm looks good now. Thanks for the info. I love having retroachievements but hated the cropping. Now i get the best of both worlds.

@lostless i opened up the files /opt/retropie/configs/nes/retroarch.cfg and /opt/retropie/fds/retroarch.cfg and added this manually to the file above the #include.... line and then saved them.

                                  video_crop_overscan = false

Hey guys, I am also experiencing video cropping on Retropie 4.1, using default NES emulator and rp-video-manager 1080 crt overlay.

I've inserted video_crop_overscan = false into both /opt/retropie/configs/nes/retroarch.cfg and /opt/retropie/fds/retroarch.cfg files and successfully saved them.

Upon booting up game the command is ignored and cropping still exists.

I have tried disabling rp video manager. overlay and resetting configs to default and then re-inserting video_crop_overscan = false on default, fresh file .cfgs (above the #include line!) again, command is ignored.

                                    Any help is greatly appreciated!

I tried them both now, and nestopia definitely has the better audio emulation. Mario 1 dying sounds so inaccurate in fceumm. In the past, nestopia had this strange sound bug every now and then but I no longer hear it. Though, maybe the fceumm audio accuracy might be improved in the future?

And can I recommend having the Unsaturated or Nes-Classic Palette as default? They look much better on both emulators.
