Retropie 4.1 - Kernel panic-not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown- block(179,6)

Hey guys, I just got my first Raspberry Pi and I'm trying to enjoy it as much as possible with Retropie.

Pi Model: 3 Model B
RetroPie Version Used: 4.1
Built From: Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website
USB Devices connected: Xbox 360 Controller, Keyboard
Controller used: Xbox 360 Controller
Error messages received: Kernel panic-not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown- block(179,6)
How to replicate the problem: Install 4.1, add roms, modify overscan settings or split memory settings.

And my Pi refuses to boot up any further.
I noticed that anytime I've downloaded a version of 4.1 and I try to view the image it says "this file is corrupt". Am I doing something wrong here? Or is anyone else having issues with retropie images?

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Sounds to me like your SD card might be getting corrupted. You may want to try and replicate the issue with a different card. I have enough experience testing various cards on the Pi to know some of them are very temperamental and don't particularly like having an OS on them. Seems odd to me that this happened after you modified the config.txt file but stranger things have happened.

Well I learned the hard way, I didn't realize there were different classes of SD cards. I was using a class 4 sd card, which was terrible. I returned it and got a nice class 10 sd card, it's working like a charm.

@artblaster If you want a good card I recommend the Sandisk Extreme series cards. I have some benchmark results at the bottom of my thread called "SD Card Experience Requested" in the general discussion section if your curious.

@artblaster its probably the card was bad or a fake. Ive used several class 2 and class 4 cards with no issues. The class 2's i have technically could be classified as class 4 for speed when testing them.

@artblaster Sorry i missed the second part of your post, lol. Glad to hear the second card is working well. I went through a bit of a learning curve with SD cards myself and wasted more than a few dollars learning these lessons lol, but it paid off and I found a very high performing series of cards which I will get from now on most likely.

i have the error message Error messages received: Kernel panic-not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown- block(179,6) as well. i have a class 10 128gb microsd. this is the third time i have this error within weeks. each other times i format sd & reinstall the image. there has to be a way to fix this

Bad/fake sdcard probably.
