Best Emulator / ROM Set for saving high scores?
-
OK so after learning what ROM sets are (thanks Admins who by the way have mastered the art of patiently referring people to the resources on this great site without killing people like me) and their matching to emulators... before I choose a ROMset I'd like to know which is the best emulator/ROMSet for saving high scores (permanently). I've seen posts saying that lr-mame2003 and Advmame both save games but I'm wondering does this "save games" comment mean save state / position in game (which i dont care about) or save high scores (which I do care about).
Does it depend on the original Arcade game board as to whether it was originally configured for saving high scores?
Also is there a way for high scores to remain beyond a power switch off?
From what I can gather these are the two most recommend ROMsets from the wiki and the forums but which to choose for permanent saved high scores?
lr-mame2003 0.78
advmame-1.4 0.106I have bubble bobble running on Mame2003 but its not saving high scores is there something i can do to fix this? Is anyone else running this combination and managing to get high scores to work (Retro Pie 4.1, Rasp Pie 3b - stock standard install)

i haven't tested bubble bobble but it should save if you follow these instructions -
Thanks Dankcushions
I followed the instructions but still not saving?
If Im running my ROMs in the arcade ROM folder is the highscore.dat install path different to the one in the WIKI?
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/mame2003/hi folder is empty after getting hiscore on Bubble bobble?
I'll try some more ROMs to try and get something to appear in the above folder.

I tried PacMan and that worked. So I'll keep trying other ROMS and try and figure out why they not working.
thanks

it might just be that bubble bobble doesn't work with it :( i'll try myself later.

No need to try i as i found the problem. The ROM was one of my random non mame2003 ROMs that was sitting in the Arcade folder by mistake it was running under a different emulator. I have the mame2003 one now but havent had time to try it - fingers crossed it works. Thank you for your support DankCushions!

I'm having this same issue with saving high scores on any system. At first I thought it was just lr-mame2003 but it's also lr-fceumm and lr-genesis-plus-gx so far that I've tested. None of my high scores are saving anywhere. I've been looking around at the wiki but didn't see anything so far regarding high scores.
Specs: v4.1.8 running from RetroPie SD image on RPI3

What 8/16 bit console ever kept high scores?

I just died laughing just now.
Why on earth did they ever even put a high score system into games like Contra and Black Belt if they weren't going to save it on battery backup? Man, some poor kid was probably almost on that "NES Achievers" on Nintendo Power and lost his high score to not having a camera or his mom tripped over the power cord. O_o
Well, trying to figure things out for MAME now anyway. (EDIT: Got it now, figured out I had to put hiscore.dat into ~/BIOS/mame2003/)
