@barbudreadmon This has got me thinking. My main setup is on a projector (as a second screen), fairly far from my PC. Maybe I should invest in one of those Xbox controller keyboards. I've already assigned my mouse functions to the controller with JoytoKey for this very purpose.

What I really need is an AI that works out which button is needed to select Kempston joystick and automatically presses it for me and then assigns the start game key to the start button. #notreally

samples in fbneo: i’ve provided you with the link on how to use them and it specifically refers to donpachi: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/lr-fbneo/#samples. if you’re now talking about mame2003 - we weren’t talking about that romset before! please be specific.

mame2003 sample instructions are available on the mame2003 docs page: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/lr-mame2003/#samples

      @zodiark12 here's the sha1 and crc checks 2003+ is expecting. https://github.com/libretro/mame2003-plus-libretro/blob/f7e53fda8195ae9d9a2b33c1dbed27e7410a41ff/src/drivers/neogeo.c#L1574-L1589

You can compare the ones you have to these and double check your naming conversation. Make sure you done have ".rom.rom" or something like that either. Some desktops hide extensions. My guess is the check sum is off here for it not to include the file.

My pleasure. See the AM Wiki for example filters.

If you go this path in the end, maybe you could share your steps to a working AM/Retropie setup in a little How-To? 🙂

Just for another subjective opinion, I'm content with MAME 2003-Plus (in arcade) and FB Neo (in fba) next to each other and see no need to change that after moving to a Pi 4.

For more recent MAME versions, I have my bigger computers. But I didn't feel the need for that for over two years now.

There's a handy 'cloud' enabled saves storage script posted by one of the forum users - https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/18712/script-setup-script-to-sync-saves-to-cloud-services. You can maybe adapt it for your needs; it's based on rclone(rclone.org).
Other than that, git would be easy to implement, but it's a bit overkill for this purpose - unless you'd like to have a versioning system in place. A simple rsync script would suffice.

As for the file types, I guess you'll have to think if you want to synchronize:

save states (*.state[X]) memory saves (*.srm) artwork/gamelistst (media folder and/or gamelist.xml).

      ?

You could unzip them to their own separate folders - so each game has it's own folder, then browse the folders and pick the game based on your region.
      (U) is USA NTSC 60hz,
      (E) is Europe PAL 50Hz,
      (J) is Japanese NTSC 60hz.
Just pick the one you want, for each game, then (if space is a issue) zip it back up.

Thank you for all the help, everyone. I managed to compress my entire collection into CHD files. Much cleaner, and much smaller space-wise. And, they all work...except for the Sega-CD 32x games (there's only three or four of those). I guess I have to do some more homework on that one.

Not all my images were bin/cue. Getting them to be bin/cue so I could convert them to CHD was tedious and sometimes frustrating, but I got it done.

      Thanks again.

Where are you planning to get the mame gamelist txt file from?

Well, actually that was my question :-). I'm not so familiar with arcade romsets let alone how to rebuild them..
Guess I'll stick with clrmamepro for my mame romset. If i've found a solution, a certainly will post this into this topic!

      Much thanks for your help!
