RetroPie is v4.1 RPI2b advice
-
Hi there
I was a little reluctant to post this as I didn't want to be another nuub with a silly question.
I'm using the latest SD image of Retropie 4.1 on a Picade and RPI2b setup and having mixed success with some roms. On the compatibility list PacMan or Puckman if you prefer is listed as working but I've not had any success. The roms work on my ubuntu setup with MAME 0.160, but the pi wants nothing of it.
Am i using the wrong emulator to run the rom? I'm feeling a little lost and any help would be gratefully received

You need to use the proper MAME ROM set. By default, RPI 4.1 uses lr-mame2003 which utilizes the MAME 0.78 ROM set. Read through this link below for more details:

Hi guys
I'm pleased to report I fixed the problem, it was mame4all. As soon as i tried using lr-mame2003 it loaded without a hitch.
I'm just looking in to how to direct Retropie to use one single rom directory for both emulators.

You can't do that because they require different ROM sets. Read my post above.

I'm still getting to grips with using MAME, so you'll have to be patient with me :)
Going by what your saying, I guess the only thing for me to do is move all the none working roms out of the rom folder for mame4all and try them in the mame2003 folder. As the chances are they will work just like PacMan did.

BTW this guide suggest that I do setup ONE rom folder

I need to use more than one emulator to play all the games I want
It can be the case that to play all the games you want, you need to use more than one emulator - perhaps lr-mame2003 and lr-fba-next. If you want, rather than manage 2 rom folders and 2 section in Emulation Station, you could put all the roms in the "Arcade" folder. You then set which emulator you want to use on a per rom basis using the "runcommand" menu. -

The
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/
directory was made for this use case. And then you have to define what arcade emulator to use when launching a game in runcommand menu (you just need to set this once).edit: this post seems to have some useful info for you: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/5674/solved-rom-version-numbers-to-match-emulators
