@ken-tipton yes you can do that, you just need to create a joystick mapping for pacman or whatever game you want to have custom. The instructions to do this would depend on what emulator you are using. In some cases it could be just hitting tab and setting the controls in that menu.

I normally have 8 way joystick as p1 and a 8/4 way switchable for p2 and I'll map games like pacman/dk etc p2 joystick as player1 so I don't get stuck walking up those ladders ;)

Original Midway Pac-Man on MAME is best, IMO. It's by definition the most "original, authentic" way to play the game.

But if MAME stymies you, or if you're looking for the best version to play on a 480i CRT, I recommend the NES port (either Tengen or Namco, they're functionally identical). It doesn't have accurate colors (what arcade port does with NES's weird palette?), but the arcade action is 100% there.

Well, I got the same idea. My objective was to start a mame game (Star Wars) automatically.

After spending some time to set up this, I wanted to share the solution to complete the explanation available of the Retropie FAQ.

So here's the content of my autostart.sh file :

      pi@nunopi:/opt/retropie/configs/all $ more autostart.sh /opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh 0 _SYS_ "mame-libretro" "/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro/starwars.zip"

It works as expected! Quite easy with an example now :-)

@Haemogoblin said in RetroPie is v4.1 RPI2b advice:

I'm just looking in to how to direct Retropie to use one single rom directory for both emulators.

The /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/ directory was made for this use case. And then you have to define what arcade emulator to use when launching a game in runcommand menu (you just need to set this once).

edit: this post seems to have some useful info for you: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/5674/solved-rom-version-numbers-to-match-emulators
