I finally got atari800 set up to play seamlessly with a controller with buttons mapped properly. Now I am fine tuning the experience. One thing I have noticed is a faint low Hz humming sound that is consistently present whenever a game is running. It's not there in the menu.

It's a similar sound to if you take a 3mm speaker jack and touch the metal to something else conductive, like your skin, and it makes a humming sound in your speakers. That's what it sounds like.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and has found a fix? I tried playing with the sound settings in the atari800 emulator but nothing gets rid of it in there. It's subtle, so I am perfectly fine to just play with it. But if there is a way to get rid of it, that would only improve the experience.

I am going to play around with the sound settings/ speakers on the TV on which I am playing and see if it has any impact.

      Here's my system info:

      Pi Model 3
Power Supply used: Standard 5V 2.5A
      RetroPie V4.1
Built From: Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website
      USB Devices connected: None
Controller used: PS4 wireless via Bluetoth
      Error messages received: None
Log found in /dev/shm/runcommand.log (if relevant): N/A
Guide used: (Mention if you followed a guide): N/A
File: (File with issue - with FULL path): N/A
      Emulator: atari800
      Attachment of config files: N/A
How to replicate the problem: N/A

Thanks for any help in this matter.

@pjs Did you try any of the steps mentioned here - https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/sound-issues#white-noise-fix (option 4 or 1 may be the best - and making sure volume is up).

I forgot to ask Are you using analogue audio or HDMI? - if HDMI it's likely to be emulator related (apart from the volume change). I assumed you were using analogue audio out ?

@BuZz I just tried 1, 2, and 4 from that list. The humming is still present while running games in atari800 (noticeable soon as the Atari boot screen appears and remains until either the emulator menu is launched or the rom is closed. It is very faint. I am about to try some settings on the TV.

@BuZz I am using HDMI audio. I noticed #4 seemed more regarding the headphone jack but tried it anyways. I have reverted the /boot/config.txt back to default once I tried those.

Also, I will mention that audio is perfect in all other systems, it is only the atari800 emulator where this is present.

@pjs must be related to the emulation etc.

FYI I have same problem but in RetroArch that recently gained atari800 support, different platform - NVIDIA Shield TV (Android). I have decided to file a bug report at: https://github.com/atari800/atari800/issues/13
