Struggling to connect to wifi

Hi All
Ive burnt image to SD card and all seems to be working well. My real issue is I'm trying to connect retro-pie to WiFi through my raspberry pi 3 model b however when keyboard is plugged into raspberry pi the caps lock indicator doesn't work so I have no idea if I am typing in capitals or lower case as all I can see is **********
Has anyone else had this problem or know a way around it?
Do I actually need the WI-FI if I am downloading the ROMS via laptop and transferring via USB?

Setting up Wifi is a good way to be able to update your Pi installation, and it's also pretty easy to transfer ROMS, BIOS files, and edit config files from your PC/Laptop rather than doing it on the Pi itself (you can also SSH in and do things that way). I recommend it.
As far as the caps lock, I would assume it's off and hold shift if you need upper case for your wifi password.

@smiler79 Drop to the terminal using F4. Test your Caps lock status. Also bear in mind that the default setting for a keyboard in RetroPie is UK so some special characters are in different positions from US keyboard layouts. RetroPie can also be fussy over SSIDs and passwords which include non-alphanumeric characters. AND passwords that are too long. I remember reading 18 characters. You can also add your internet credentials manually in a file if you have to and you can see them in plain text. But try my other suggestions first. If that fails... come back to me.

@columboscoat thanks for a quick response I just tried your F4 suggestion and I was in lowercase anyway so have no idea why it wasn't working and unfortunately still isn't working. None off the lights turn on the keyboard either which seems weird (although buttons still working)
I am also in UK so it wouldn't be a layout issue. My password is 12 characters
Would appreciate it if you have any other ways around this

Very odd that the leds are not illuminating. Are you using a decent power supply? Not that a keyboard draws a huge amount... -
@columboscoat thanks for the link will try and battle that now. Im guessing you mean power supply for the raspberry pi? If so its 5v output and the keyboard was USB. Ive only got that and a controller plugged in would that be too much?

@smiler79 It shouldn't be. Is the PSU ~2.5Amps? Is it a hardwired dedicated PSU or a plug and USB cable combo? Some USB cables just cannot transfer enough power as they are designed for phones and tablets that draw a lot less juice.
