What exactly does "factory reset config files" do?

I'm running retropie 4.1 on a raspberry Pi 3. I got one of the kits from the auction site that had all emulators and Kodi preinstalled.

I've been having a few problems with my retropie installation ever since I got a NES30 Pro controller. I posted elsewhere with problems I've had with my controller configurations, but as I was mucking around trying to get the controllers to work, I must have messed something else up.

I tried the "Factory Reset Config Files" in the retropie menu thinking that would give me fresh settings to work with without having to wipe my sd card and reinstall everything. After I did this reset, I've found that three of my emulators have ceased to function. Specifically it's the SNES, Neo Geo, and PC Engine emulators that aren't working. They all worked fine prior to this reset.

Now when I try to run a game in any of these three emulators I get a black screen for a few seconds and then returns to the ROM list.

What can I check to troubleshoot these emulators?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

If I understand you correctly...You bought a pre-loaded Pi kit and instead of getting support from the person / place you bought it from, you're coming here?

@clengman Without knowing how it was setup before you reset the configs, as this is an unsupported image, there's nothing i can advise past download the official build and start again.

Or as @batesman suggests, go back to the unscrupulous ebay seller for some support.

Sorry, didn't realize this would hit a nerve. If my device had arrived not functioning properly, I would certainly have contacted the seller. Since I've now made changes to the installation, I don't figure it's his problem anymore. But maybe I'll contact him and see if he has any ideas.

Also, I'm not sure what makes the seller unscrupulous. He sold me some parts and a service. It does no harm to retropie.org. In fact, I appreciate the work that's been done to develop the software. It's a pretty awesome thing. I was thinking I'd probably make a donation to support it.

Ok. So say I had bought a package of parts, raspberry pi, controllers, psu, hdmi cable, and sd card. Then I pay an individual, because I'm lazy and I just want to open the box, load a few ROMS and play some games with my daughter on Christmas morning, to provide the service of putting the retropie image on the card, installing emulators and drivers and testing it out to be sure that it all works. It's that unscrupulous? How is it any different than what this ebay seller did? I had no misperceptions regarding just what I was paying for.

And as I wrote above, the developers of retropie and the members of the retropie community suffer no harm from someone distributing their free software. In fact they may benefit from some people like me who feel an obligation to make a donation to support their efforts. Am I wrong?

Because the emulator licenses forbid it. Because the software added value - I'm pretty sure the advert was based around what the software can do.

The seller is profiting from RetroPie whether or not they claim to be giving it away.

We don't include a reset configuration files option in the RetroPie menu, so sounds like the seller is modifying RetroPie. You will need to get help from them or install a fresh image from our site.
