What is the MAME ROW?
MAME ROW stands for MAME Random Of the Week. We randomly select an arcade game from the 0.78 MAME ROMset to play on the week. The idea is to play games we've never played before, interact with other forum members, post hi-scores, share game strategies, fun facts, and (the most important) HAVE FUN!
There's no need to use RetroPie to join the MAME ROW! You can play it on any platform you want.
Every Monday we create a topic at the "General Discussion and Gaming" forum section with the 3 random games to be voted. And on Wednesday we check the results.
The current week's game thread is just where there are more people interacting/talking about the game(s). Feel free to post your hi-score (or any content about the game) anytime you want on the previous "rounds" topics (links below).
These "rules" are constantly being improved!
Links to the previous "rounds"
- Phoenix (not randomly chosen)
- New Rally-X (not randomly chosen)
-
These three all look great, I've never heard of any of them before, and am looking forward to giving them a try, thanks!
-
https://www.youtube.com/user/MameVideoSnaps has an extensive collection of video clips that are short, but give you a good sense of the game. I've been using their videos when possible.
-
Legend of Kage was one of my all time favs, I was very happy to see it show up here.
Great game and lot's of fun. -
Legend of Kage was also one of my favs but I want to try out the other 2 before I vote.
I can't believe we're on #20! Seams like not that long ago we did Pang! but looking at the list it is #6!
I'm not sure if my memory is failing me but didn't we play Trojan before we played Phoenix?
-
@obsidianspider Thanks for that, I just spent a happy hour browsing through their uploaded videos, and taking notes of ones I have to try!
-
I just checked the poll and only two people have voted, and it's tied. Get your votes in so we can announce the game we'll be playing!
Also, I'm thinking that with the preview videos, people may not be seeing the link to vote (because, people tend not to read) so where would be a good spot to put the link to vote in the original post? The top? The bottom? Right now it was right after the game descriptions but I think it's getting "lost".
-
Sorry I meant to vote last night but didn't get round to it.
I've voted now, although I see it hasn't really helped matters!
I thought Yamato was probably good for it's time, I remember 'Beachhead' on the ZX Spectrum/Commodore64 at the time being amazing. The gameplay mechanic hasn't really aged very well though.
At first I wasn't keen on Super Glob, but after reading the instructions online, I really got into it, and thought it was a fun game. It's also another excuse for me to use my 4-way controller.
The Legend of Kage didn't really do it for me. It pre-dates Shinobi by a good 3 years, so for that I guess it should be admired - but it seemed to me a lot like pot-luck whether I killed the bad guys or one managed to get through my hail of shuriken and kill me first. I probably need to spend more time on it.
For tactical puzzle-like play, and the sheer satisfaction of calling a lift to squish a frog on a different floor, my vote this week goes to SUPER GLOB.
-
@obsidianspider I just voted and now it's tied again, doh!
-
Now it's untied! :)
-
Get ready for some elevator-y goodness with Super Glob!
-
I forgot to vote but probably a good thing as I would have voted for LOG putting us back at a tie.
-
Off to a rocky start. I keep messing up the timing of squashing enemies.
15,579 so far
-
Okay here's my best attempt so far - 25662
No real tips, although I found it easier to ride the lift up and down to squash all the creatures on a floor before attempting to collect the items on it, rather than rely on the difficult to judge dropping from the ceiling attack method.
Also the creatures appear one floor at a time, to for the first few levels it's possible to quickly clear the floors in order before any creatures have time to appear on the floor you are on.
