RPi3 Win 3.1/95 Emulation In DOSBox?
-
@backstander Will do.
I've only seen people doing it on a Pi 2. Pi 3 probably won't be significantly better. What I would do to run Age of Empires on my Pi knows no limits. Once I get my build 'final' (never) I'll definitely be moving on to trying it.

Im gonna have to get windows 3.1 so i can play their version of solitaire and minesweeper. Plus i want to try out indiana jones.
-
@backstander can you tell me how to get sound working in windows 3.1 on dosbox on the pi. On both the pi and the pc i use the sb16win3x.iso (extracted to a folder on the pi) when i click on all the audio software stuff like the creative mixer it tells me that the .dll'are missing and the exe's are missing even though the sb16 folder and all of its contents are there and i cant get the windows sounds to work either because of this.
Edit: nm i figured it out. You have To install it all in a specific way for it to work with dosbox
-
@backstander how did you get windows 3.1 out of 16 color mode and into 256 colors. I tried to play indiana jones but cant because of that.
-
@edmaul69
I don't remember having problems with the color mode when I had it installed. I don't have it currently installed on my RPi. You might have to Google Windows 3.1 in DOSBox color mode. -
@edmaul69
Okay, I remember installed a graphic card drive. I followed a tutorial but I didn't save it.Here's another tutorial showing how to install the S3 video driver:

@backstander i found a nice guide with links to all kinds of stuff for this. Had to install s3 in windows setup outside of windows gui because of it looking for s3 flat driver disk otherwise. Someone else had this issue so this was the way to fix that. Got the s3 video drivers installed, ibm joystick drivers installed, so my controller works in games and even in windows.

ibm joystick drivers installed, so my controller works in games and even in windows.
That's a great idea! Maybe when I revisit this, I'll install joystick drivers for Win3.1!
-
@backstander i didnt have to install any mouse drivers or anything to make the usb devices work. Just the old ibmjoy driver. I will post a link to where i got a lot of drivers and guides from when i am at my computer.

Thanks @edmaul69 ! I like the added Win32s, VfW and Quicktime from this walkthrough.
-
@backstander yup i had to install those too. I also installed photoshop 3.0, ms office 3.0, word perfect and some others. I cannot get star wars: yoda stories to install. Tried two versions and the demo. I reinstalled everything today because i had originally installed windows 3.11 instead of windows for workgroups 3.11.
-
@edmaul69
I did a quick search and I found a forum stating that Yoda Stories was a Win 95 game and not a Win 3.1 game. I could have sworn I had it installed on Win 3.1 on my RPi in DOSBox!

@HPK-de - Saw you did some Win 95 testing on the RPi3. Any luck with Age of Empires by chance?
-
@hooperre I installed Windows 3.1 on DosBox on the Pi3 in a matter of minutes. It was amusing because it detected the CPU as a 250 MHz 486. Runs like a dream and the few Windows 3.1 games I tried to run, besides some config issues, seemed to run very well.
-
@hooperre as drake stated, it is really easy to install. I had absolutely no issues. I installed about 40 games. Runs great.

I've recently become aware of an open source emulation / virtualization suite called QEMU, which can apparently run Windows 95 and Windows 98 on the Raspberry Pi, and may even be able to run Windows XP (but don't expect awesome performance from XP). Now I just heard about it so take it with a grain of salt, but apparently there is a guy on Youtube running Windows 95 and 98 simultaneously on a Pi2. I'm curious about this and may look into it when I have time. I'll post the results when if / when I get the opportunity to play with this. If someone else wants to give it a whirl feel free. I'm curious to hear your experiences.
-
Please do!
-
So I just installed Windows 3.11 with video and audio drivers successfully on my Pi3 with RetroPie, everything is working. Now, did anyone try to make Windows 95 work? That's probably what I am gonna do next, so I would be happy if anyone could share his experience.

@Spiky you need to make a specific image file (fake hard drive). Only problem is the program isnt available anymore and nobody seems to have made it downloadable on another site.
