rii mini i8+ media buttons - How to map with RetroArch (or any other way)

Has anyone succeeded in mapping the media buttons of the rii mini i8+ to be used in emulators?
They map just fine inside emulationstation but they are not recognised by RetroArch (I read that RetroArch doesn't support these buttons)
I'm running RetroPie 4.1 on a Rpi3
and use a Rii mini i8+ until my controllers com in.

@wolv RetroArch only recognises key strokes. These buttons send media commands like "browser_search" and are therefore incompatible.
