Hosting ROMs in the cloud
-
Hi all,
forgive me cos i'm new at this - rather than downloading all the ROMs and hosting on a USB/HDD - now that the R/Pi3 is out (with WiFi) - any reason why we can't just connect to a cloud based drive which hosts all the ROMs?
Is there a licensing issue or??
Cheers

If we build in support for let's say, Google drive, Dropbox, etc, there is no issue with licensing if its your own private account. Obviously, they can't be shared, and assuming you own the physical copies (and all of that yadda yadda) this would be a great feature. Especially if managing multiple retropie systems in your home, office, second home or wherever.
SuperRetro16 for Android has a similar feature.
It's very doable. Just need the community to vote or call for it so it can be baked in or at least an optional package to install.
API sdks already exist for almost every cloud storage provider for Linux so this wouldn't be a giant task.
Mount a virtual disk, that is pointing to the local folders location of where the cloud service syncs to on the PIs sd and rig up some code to get the cloud flavor of choice syncing to the PI.

Chris. It's illegal I think. Yeah sure lets host the entire Final Burn Alpha romset of 24GB, PSX romset of 1.5TB, and for MAME... which romset? All the romsets for all the emus? Not a good idea at all, I don't want to sound harsh but if you don't even know how to use Google for roms you really shouldn't get a Rpi3+RetroPie.
@InventorTechie There IS an issue even if it's your private account, you're sharing copyrighted files on your account. Soon or late the account would be terminated and the entire project would fall.
Who the heck plays games in the office, do they pay you to work or to play games? If it's the last please sign me up LOL.
Again a bad idea, the last things the devs of RetroPie could use is a lawsuit. This is just asking for problems.

I don't think he was suggesting that the files be sharable, but that you can host your own roms in the cloud.

This is true though. While 'asking for problems' seems harsh, it certainly opens the door for problems.

Raises hand. I sometimes use my work computer to play games on my lunch break.

Well, cloud hosting costs money. Using a private cloud to host your collection of private roms is kinda weird if you ask me. Why would anyone want to do that? You can use even a 128gb SD card and if thats not enough you always can use an external HD.

Even if it was his private collection he simply could buy a 1tb external hdd. But I think he meant a cloud based drive as in an official retropie cloud drive with all the roms. IMO bad idea. Just download them and put them on your SD card or USB drive.
@mattrixk LOL. How much lunch time do you have?
-
@PetroRie there's always network shares which is kinda like a personal cloud
-
@PetroRie 1 hour. I use it to prepare and devour lunch, work on themes and watch stuff on YouTube. I'll occasionally get into modes of playing stuff. Before I discovered retropie I had a full LaunchBox setup on my work computer.
I'l just add; I thought the OP was talking about a personal network. I run my setup off my NAS drive, so I have plenty of space for my larger files.
