    I am unable to get the metal slug series to work with MAME 2003 on my Pi3 B / RetroPie rig. I can get plenty of games to work in MAME but just not this series. This would not bug me so much but plenty of others seem to have this working fine. I have them in NEO GEO working great but I want the Arcade version. It's a .78 Romset and as I said I am using it in Mame 2003 on a RPi3B box that has been updated with both packages and setup script.

    Other games will not work either such as Blitz, Killer Instinct, and Rampage ( super sad face on this one ) but that seems to be common, whereas Metal Slug should work compared to what I have read. I tried searching the forums but have had no luck. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

    Thanks

      I believe the 'Metal Slug' series should be working in lr-mame2003. Have you verified that the ROMs are indeed from the 0.78 ROM set? I have no idea about 'Blitz', but I just looked it up and I would be surprised if it played on the Pi at all with how graphically intense it appears. 'Killer Instinct' definitely falls into this category and can only be made to play at a few frames per second. 'Rampage' will not run on lr-mame2003, but is possible with lr-mame2010 and after, as well as the AdvanceMAME options.

        While I double check the rom verification, is lr-mame2010 available on the pi 3 as a worthwhile option?

          @Trailjacker

          lr-mame2010 is available in the "optional" packages of the RetroPie-Setup script. It's worthwhile as a solution to get the classics up and running that won't play in lr-mame2003. However, MAME gets more and more accurate with each passing version, which also means it runs slower and slower on low-end devices like the Pi. Anything past the 1980's and you're likely to start seeing slowdown.

            @mediamogul Thank you , that helps a lot with my question.

            So I check the rom in MAME and it says some are 2003 and some are earlier and are working (in the current MAME version ) but when I attempt to run them I get an error that the CHD ( which those shouldn't have ) or missing one or more required roms. That is coming from the most current MAME executable on my windows laptop.

              I don't believe there's a way to check the ROM version within MAME itself. The link I posted above details how to do it though. If it's barking at you about missing files, it's most likely from the wrong ROM set.

                As a side note, I am under the impression I need a BIOS for the Metal Slug games since they are Neo Geo but putting the standard Neo Geo bios in the mame 2003 folder with the roms does not change anything.

                  The BIOS file must also be from the same ROM set.

                    You can put the ROMs in the Arcade folder and then choose a lf-fbalpha as your default emulator for them. I'm not sure if that will give you what you want, but for Neo Geo, I only use lr-fbalpha.

                      If you're going to mix and match ROMs anyway, lr-fbalpha is indeed the better solution to NEO-GEO.

                        @mediamogul Well, I was trying to keep everything separate so I could visuall see the differences and compare. I am attempting to use clrmamepro but and having trouble so I have not released my rom results yet.

                            @mediamogul Haha awesome ! I am running it now but am getting an error on every rom and a red x so I must have something incorrect since I hate almost off of them working.

                              @mediamogul @obsidianspider Thank you both, I upvoted all comments. It turned out to be the neogeo.zip was not from the romset. I did not catch that before when i unpacked the .78 romset. Thank you again, this is an amazing community. I do not know how to get or give rep on here as I just signed up recently but let me know and I will pass it on to you.

                                      For Metal Slug I would recommend lr-fbAlpha from my own experience, but beware, it requires a different neogeo.zip. If you place all your MAME roms into the Arcade folder, they all show up under Arcade (both FB Alpha and MAME), which is very cool. Running MS 1+2+3+X on my Pi3, but without complicated shaders and Video Smooth on.
