@dnaeye said in How to get Raiden Fighters running?!:

I have MAME 0.184 roms for the Raiden Fighters series (RF, II, Jet), but I can't get them to work with any of the default emulators in Retropie (Mame2003, advanceMame, FBA, etc). What am I doing wrong

none of those emulators use mame 0.184 (actually, the latest version of lr-fbalpha sort of does, but it doesn't support Raiden Fighters)

, or is it even possible to run these games on one of these emulators?

you'll have to see if this game is in the romsets that those emulators DO support.

(By the way, I tried the experimental Mame2016 emulator and it was too sloooooow.)

this may be the case for the other emulators also.

        Please take a look here : https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/MAME
0.184 romset is not supported on MAME versions included in retropie.
        Edit : busted

@dnaeye None of the MAME / FBA emulators in RetroPie use the 0.184 Rom set, which I think is the latest set from MAME. Check here https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/MAME which versions are available and check the specific set to see if the games you want to run are available in that set.

Well, the Raiden (2, Jet,...) Romsets do actually run on AdvanceMame in Retropie, but sloooooow.
I suggest the Pi doesnt offer enough power to run them anyway.
            Only Raiden 1 runs fine.

@sirhenrythe5th Yeah, Raiden runs well in lr-mame2003 / 0.78 ROM set.

Then, is there an easy way to downgrade the rom version to work on Retropie's default emulators? I can't find Raiden Fighters in any of the reference sets online.

@sirhenrythe5th It's weird that SFIII runs just fine with FBA, but an old shooter like Raiden Fighters can't. Likewise, other similar-era shmups like Giga Wing, Gun Bird, and Dodonpachi run in FBA.

@dnaeye You can't roll back if that version doesn't support the game.

Well, then does anyone here have the game running well on their Retropie? If so, which emulator?

@dnaeye I run super mario world on the SNES emulators. It works like a charm! :)

N64 emulation is the next step :)

@dnaeye i agree that newer games may run better in some cases, but you cannot really compare games in MAME just by their date.
Of course titles like dodonpachi (I LOVE THIS ONE!!!) run great, but it was developed by Raizing / Cave (former Toaplan-Guys) and the depending Arcade-System is well known and nearly perfectly handled by the Mame-DevTeam.

That means: it runs great, same situation as far as Capcoms Systems as CPS1, 2&3 are concerned.

But that does not mean that EVERY system is that well supported, even if it is much oder.
I also love "Buggy Boy" from the early 80s, Player the real machine in the Netherlands on vacation as a kid.
It took a loooong time until i was runnable at all - and still now far away from perfect.

RAIDEN Games was developed by some kind of one-hit-wonder Developer "Seibu Kaihatsu" and the coding for its emulation is not state of the art and so it needs much CPU-Power.

Maybe when Stephen Hawkings recodes the emulator Raiden Fighters will run even on a Commodore 64, but right now it needs power even if same-aged games run like a charm.

@dankcushions Found it! For anyone else interested, Raiden Fighters is listed (as untested, though) for Mame2010 (and up) and AdvanceMame 0.94 (and up). Thanks guys!
