When you download a ROM from a rom site, it's in a zipped folder. Do you have to then extract the rom from it and put this on the Pi, or do you transfer the zipped file?

I suppose you'd have to un-extract the ZIP file, but sometimes there are exceptions. I'd go with unzipping, as that's the usual way I do it.

"A LEGO brick."

I keep them zipped unless the emulator does not support them packed.
Most of them do. -
I unzip for the sole purpose that some zips come with multiple versions of the same game (like the J,U,E versions) - it's good to at least check.

I tend to leave them zipped for the older consoles but any cd based system I unzip them as they are usually slightly faster to be read by the emulator as they do not need decompressing
