Various RetroPie Issues

I haven't made one of these for over a year, but I have struggled this evening. Just a few things...

When I obtained my Roms, I ensured they were all EU versions - just because I wanted the same version as I originally had. However, some of them like Digger T Rock and Bart vs The Space Mutants for the NES, have their audio speeded up and part of the screen flashes and loses image? Not all games do it, but these and a couple of other titles have. Where am I going wrong?
I renamed on my game files before transferring them to the Pi so they were all neat. I seem to be having issues loaidng GBA games though... I open one and it just returns straight back to the main menu in Retropie. Is this a character file name issue?
Black borders and screen issues... I want the screen to fill my TV area at all times, on any TV I use with the Pi. I went to sudo nano /boot/config.txt and removed the # and this did nothing. I then went into the option within Retropie that lets you change the overscan, and it does now fill the screen but too much. The word 'start' on the main menus is out of place so I can only see 'art'. Again, am I doing something wrong?

From the Docs:
"If you want to use PAL roms, make sure they contain (E) or (Europe) in the filename, or else they may be run at the wrong speed."

It could be, but there are several possibilities. Were they working before you renamed them? Which emulator are you using? Are you using one that needs a BIOS and if so, is it present?

So with the speeded up games, that's where I've gone wrong then. I hadn't tried them before renaming the files. I didn't want (E) showing up in retropie next to all my titles.

In terms of screen issues, I did look at that link and still struggled.

The necessary steps are detailed in the docs. Having just looked over it myself, it appears that all the GBA emulators make use of a BIOS.

I didn't want (E) showing up in retropie next to all my titles.

You can always remove them in the metadata list names of Emulation Station. That way they're still there and will do their job, but you won't have to see them.

I did look at that link and still struggled.

If you're referring to the readmefirst link, it tells you what information you need to post when making a help request. Without that information, any possible solutions are just based on guesswork.

Normally I would do, but it's a fairly generic issue in terms of how you get the system to fill the complete screen on the TV.

ok so you're going to want to reverse everything you've done here.

i'm presuming what you're talking about is stretching the image of these typically 4:3 (non-widescreen) games to a 16:9 (widescreen) HDTV? so that they have no vertical black borders?

if so, to do that you need to go into https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Configuration-Editor, then configure default options for all libretro emulators > aspect ratio > set it to 16:9

this is going to make the games look all stretched out and weird, but each to their own ;)

Thanks, think the overscan thing is ok now, was just my tv settings.

The issue with the NES playing really fast wasn't the filename, it was the emulator. I changed to NEStopia and it was fine. It's weird as I thought Retropie would come with the best emulators as default?

Regarding your issue with the GBA BIOS, you may have to try a few before you find one that works. Also, the md5sum is noted here to compare against your own.
