Quake 3 Arena: Multiplayer? (RetroPie 4.2.10)
-
I mean, it's very likely for a LAN party to run. There's like 7 PCs and one tiny Pi playing the game Quake 3 Arena.
I don't know, it seems no one has talked about this yet, which is kind of surprising. It's a fun game, but it's even better when it's online.
-
@allanbuzzy i only ever had the demo, and never played online, we did used to do a lan party every dec 26th though and we played tons of cnc, unreal and all quakes, it wasnt until cod1 that I played online. If anyone here played cod 1.4 im JPN[ 0 ] M00SE. Bow before the skills of JPN[ 0 ] . lol
-
Even though it's a DEMO, how come it can still connect online?
-
Mine showed the thermometer icon last night whilst playing quake 3 arena, I sorted that out today by printing a case with a 80mm fan on it, there is a kind of cone on the back of the fan that channels it down a bit more at the cpu, and has the fortunate side effect of making it a bit quieter.
I bet it doesnt get hot now. -
@allanbuzzy most likely it's the full client with the demo .pak file. So in essence it's the full version missing most of the maps.
-
@lostless So do I literally need to buy a physical copy of Quake 3 Arena just for a CD key?
-
@allanbuzzy it's not a cd key. The actual .pak file that contains all the data is the the demo, the app is just a client. You need the retail .pak file to get the full version. Plus there were extra pak files for the updates. It's been a while since I've messed with quake 3 files.
But think of it like doom. The game data is not in the executable but in the .wad files. -
on another note, after a quick skirmish, the CPU was sat at 40C it used to sit at 65-70 just in the menu of ES, im happy with my massivly oversized fan
-
@lostless So if I were to get this retail .pak file, where would I put it on my files?
-
@allanbuzzy actually the files are .pk3 files. It's been a while. But the retail file goes into the baseq3 folder. Where it is on the pi, no idea
-
I've just checked and the DEMO doesn't really restrict you from using Multiplayer, but I have a feeling there's got to be some limit to how long you can play. After all, it's a DEMO. However, when I go to play Multiplayer, the servers do NOT come up. I do not know what I need to do for them to show UP, or if it's just because of the source code being ported and multiplayer being not compatible.
-
Quake 3 Arena was a free-to-play game that has later transformed into Quake Live (buy-to-play) which is still going on. So, I'd be very surprised if it was possible to play MP on some DEMO - whatever that demo may be. I don't suppose it's the ancient q3test you mean?
-
@arkive Well, what I mean is that this video documents that it kind of works, and there are still servers up for Quake 3, which is very awesome.
EDIT: I just realised that it's because of the Steam implementation. I doubt that some servers will work with the Pi. -
Not necessarily Steam implementation. It's possible there are servers - I just didn't realize people still use this demo to play (I think it was originally released in 1999 after q3test, which was basically Quake 3 alpha)
I play Quake 2 regularly, there are still servers going, and I bet same for Q1. However, if you can cross-play on them with an RPi is another matter (probably not).
Try a searching bit more, you never know though.
-
@arkive Yes, I'd love to go deep into this and get it working, but the problem is that while I do find my ways getting this game to work, the problem lies with the Protocol of some servers. I know how to update a Port via the RetroPie-Setup, but most servers ONLY work on the current patch (1.32c) and I have a feeling that the current RetroPie port only goes up to 1.6 or some number I can't remember.
I don't want to fiddle round with the files, as it may mess up my game. Also, I forgot to mention that it doesn't connect to the master server.
-
is there not a way to host a server? we always used to host our own servers, either directly on the pc or with gamespy, surely something like that exists?
-
on another note, after a quick skirmish, the CPU was sat at 40C it used to sit at 65-70 just in the menu of ES, im happy with my massivly oversized fan
You can try to use Power Saving mode ... @hex ist currently working on.
I've an older merged branch of favourties and PS in my github for binary ES archives
-
-
What I mean is that the Master Server that Quake 3 uses refuses to give a response and will not let me view a server list. I've tried updating my Quake 3, but this doesn't work and nor does specifying what servers to connect to. It is stuck on a Protocol version screen.
-
Ok, I've just figured out that you need to open the Console by pressing Tildas, and typing this: set sv_master 1 "master.ioquake3.org"
But be cautious. Some servers install mods and I don't think there's a way to delete them on a USB stick. I'll update this post if this is true or not as I'm currently trying to find the mods folder somewhere.
