Ok so before anyone starts flaming CHD are slow, dont work etc etc..

it's not CHDs. there are several CHD games that work full speed in mame2003. kinst has a specific bug that stops it booting but it can handle other CHDs fine.

it's possible he hacked the driver to get it to boot a non-chd version, but i'd be suprised by the performance...

As do I, but there's nothing in that video that couldn't be done on a PC running RetroPie. You can name a ROM file whatever you want.

That said, if the guy in the video did manage to make it work I would hope he shares how, because there are plenty of CHD games that could benefit from whatever technique was used.

Seems like bs to me. He avoids the question when asked about it.

I have been checking the video comments and this link (https://github.com/libretro/mame2003-libretro/issues/38) but no updates... I don't want to put pressure on him... but or you show SOMETHING or people will keep saying is FAKE

Killer Instinct 1 and 2 should be working in MAME 2003 but there is a bug that currently prevents it. There is now a bounty open to raise the funds to attract a coder to fix this bug.

The most likely way get these games running would be to contribute to the bounty: https://www.bountysource.com/issues/35638008-regression-in-killer-instinct-1-and-2-support

@markwkidd Did you watch the video, of somone playing killer instinct, on the pi.. via mame 2003 ?

Seems bounty isnt needed. its already running.

@a7mag3ddon That person says that they have a special copy of the ROM which they cannot distribute. That may be true, but it could also be a fake video.

The best way to deal with this is to fix the bug with MAME 2003 instead of modifying the ROM, although if this special ROM ever gets into circulation maybe my opinion will change.

Annnnd... that youtube video has been taken offline. Too good to be true.

Meanwhile, libretro is about to enable support for Killer Instinct for Intel x86 platforms. It may be possible to add suport for ARM and AMD x64 platforms, but not without some effort put into backporting code from later versions, including AdvanceMAME.

Every time I see one of those bounties I just think of how many people don't care or they probably want hundreds to work on it. What happens to the money if nobody cares enough to fix it?

Killer Instinct 1/2 now works on x86 and pi! thanks to @markwkidd - kinst loads, and runs at about 2 FPS on pi3. very unplayable, so be careful what you wish for ;) however x86 users can at least run it, and it should be playable.

Well it's a start. Maybe some legend out there can use this and turn it into a FBA version that actually runs at full speed. They were able to make versions of street fighter 3 for FBA that didn't need a separate CHD.

@evert it's not to do with the CHD - they don't impact performance. it's more that it's trying to emulate N64 hardware with purely the CPU!

@QANinja i watched the video, and I can confirm that your method does work! You're right it lags a lot on the R Pi 3, but I followed what you did in my PC running Linux and got it to work. Thanks.!!

People have to use Mame 2010 instead of 2003

So, you created an account to advertise the video and then created a new account to give a 'review' that it works. Got it.
