@lilbud While a lot of the info on here goes straight over my head, I just bimble along as best I can, what really impresses me time after time is the effort and extent these folks go to help. Big thumbs up from me, and cake, always cake:))

They say the fifth anniversary gift is wood, but since this is a family forum, I'll just offer my deepest and most sincere congratulations and appreciation to everyone on another amazing year. Happy birthday RetroPie!

          Oh, what the hell...

Maybe a "Retropie 5th Aniversary" edition release would be nice.....with all the latest improvements, themes, etc...

Dang, RetroPie has aged so much.

Anyone have an old picture of retropie?

@itsnitro Don't have much of a picture, but I can describe how awful and unfriendly towards beginners it was.

                  RETROPIE 2.6

                  • Controllers had to be configured for ES and Retroarch separately
                  • Hotkeys had to be added manually
                  • Theming was extremely limited with what you could do.
                  • Setting up WiFi was difficult, needing to be done manually through an obscure file (etc/network/interfaces)
                  • Scraping anymore than 10 - 15 games could take an entire day and was prone to errors

Anyone got more to add to this list?

Here are some screenshots of my RetroPie v1.9 build from May 2014.

                            0_1500753756000_nes.png
This was a theme for NES I was working on in EmulationStation 1.0. before RetroPie v2 with ES 2.0 was released in July 2014.

                            0_1500753798218_snes.png
There was no systems screen in EmulationStation 1.0; it was straight to the games list. I would use left and right on the D-pad to navigate between systems. It could take a few seconds for ES to wake up and respond to the key press so I would press the D-pad again (and again). ES would move past the system I wanted so I had to scroll back.

                            0_1500753933439_doom.jpg
The Doom theme needed some work.

                            0_1500753888038_input-config.png
This was the last screen in ES before I would need to scroll left for the other systems. I never used it as there wasn't any documentation available explaining its purpose. This was my first install guide for connecting a PS3 controller via bluetooth. After using it, I became accustomed to editing config files manually, something I still prefer to do in the latest version of RetroPie.

Booting up v1.9 on my RasPi 1 Model B took me back to the day when I first installed RetroPie via the setup script. I started around 3pm on a Saturday afternoon and I was ready to play my first game at 10pm. It was definitely worth it.

Over the years, It's been a pleasure to have seen the many improvements in RetroPie so that I can install it and be playing inside half an hour. Many thanks to those concerned for their hard work.

@lilbud The most important introduction to EmulationStation 2.0 was the ability to shut down the Pi safely from the options menu. The only way I found to do this in my v1.9 build was to run sudo shutdown -h now via SSH.

                                  sudo shutdown -h now

If I had a dollar for every time I typed sudo shitdown -h now instead of shutdowni'd be rich
