Running ROMs from an External Drive issues. FSTAB method.

I came across this set of directions for setting up the ability to run ROMs from an external drive. I have gone through the steps many times to no avail. I have tried editing FSTAB many times and have only been able to successfully load RetroPie after undoing the modifications I made to FSTAB. Is there something I am missing? After making the edits and trying to run RetroPie, the system tries going into Emergency Mode and offers different boot methods and displays commands for them. In this text, it says something like you failed to login. Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Edit: "Removed" due to missunderstandings

@Squatta did you try the 'automatic method' first? fstab editing ('manual method') isn't needed in current retropie. it should be nice and simple now :)

@dankcushions Yes, however I do not have internet access from home, save a library that I can connect to across the street, so I was unable to update, in order to complete that method.

After doing some more reading, I think this may have something to do with permissions and FAT32 formatting. I am going to try EXT4 and see if that works. Is there a default user/pass for Pie out of the box? I have not set any credentials, so that may be where the issue lies as well...
