Emulation without the frontend?

Don't know if this goes here, or in "help and support", so forgive me, but is there a way to get retropie or some other emulator on raspberry pi without the full SD image frontend? I'm just looking for something that can run NES/SNES roms on top of basic raspbian jessie.
