Anything I choose in the Retropie menu does not open the menu but instead goes to a console/terminal black screen.

Whenever I choose an option from the retropie menu in Emulation Station, such as Retropie Setup or Wifi setup, instead of bringing up the blue and gray menu screen, it goes to what looks like the console screen that contains info at the top from boot and just stays on that screen. You can type on the screen and I have tried to enter commands but it does not do anything. What am I doing wrong. This is a fresh install of the latest retrorangepi dist (3.0.1) and the board is a orangepi lite. I am somewhat new to the raspberry pi so I apologize if this is a simple answer. It was working before I reimaged the SD with the new retrorangepi image.Any help would be greatly appreciated.
