Pre-loaded Retropie not recognising the new controller
-
hi there,
i've purchased a raspberry pi 3 console with retropie pre-installed, it also comes with 2 pre-configured controllers and micro sd card (pre-loaded with retropie & some roms ready to play). it's working all fine until i wanna transfer more roms and adding new controllers for 4 players (Mario Kart). i did go through the FAQ before the post, however FAQ are for brand new set up which does not apply to my situation (mine's all pre-configured).
first question is adding roms to the micro sd card, when I plug the sd card in it shows 36.6MB free of 56.8MB…. did I do anything wrong? I don’t want to format it because all the pre-loaded stuff will be gone isn’t it?
My second question is about adding additional controllers, my friends came over and brought their USB controllers (preconfigured with their orangepie console) however when I it plug in to my console it just not recognising. They are both Bluetooth controllers, my friend didn’t bring the dongle, but I did connect them through an usb cable and plug directly into my console. I’ve also tried to go into driver to install a ps3 controller and reboot the console however still saying only 2 gamepads detected (mine 2). i watched few tutorials on the website, their ones were able to detect straight away, but when i plug it in through the usb port and go to congifure and press any key, nothing at all.
really want to the other 2 controllers work as few more friends are coming during the weekend, please help.
thanks in advance
cheers,
Ken -
Apart from the fact that, afaik, it is not legal to provide Retropie pre-installed, as you bought a "pre-installed" retropie kit you should ask support to the seller. He only knows the configuration he provided you.

exactly, because we don't support unlicensed preloaded set ups.

yes, but that's the only way to get support here. if you want to continue with your preloaded system you have to get the seller to support you. it's the least they could do after selling this communities work as their own!

Get a new SD card and start from scratch. It'll probably be faster than getting help from someone who was likely just looking to make a quick buck based on the work of the myriad contributors to the software that RetroPie brings together.

i did go through the FAQ before the post,
Number 5 in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first states:
"Make sure you are using an official image, or have done a manual install yourself. We will not support 3rd party images."

@udb23 thanks udb23. i did msg the seller however got no response yet, hence went to youtube for tutorials still no luck.

@dankcushions thanks dankcushions. after reading all the replies i understand how the forum works (i'm new to raspberry pi)
i'll format the sd card and follow the forum instructions. just want to ask will the controllers work after i format the sd card? i.e. after i format the sd card and put in the official image, will retropie detect the 4 controllers (which are all pre-configured with the current retropie)?
-
@obsidianspider thanks for the reply, i'll format this sd card from the seller. as i'm new the seller's ad caught my eyes - plug and play and require no expertise.
-
@rbaker thanks for the heads up. to be honest i did see that line however didn't really understand the image actually refers to the retropie system.
will format it and follow the instructions.

This is sadly part of a wider issue. People pay a scammer money for something that is free. The scammer sets it up - often incorrectly. Some scammers even point to this forum for support! Most scammers aren't using the latest version. Although this software can be as complex as you want to make it, it is essentially plug and play in the first instance to be up and running. The guide is a great starting point and if you follow it, you can be up and running in under 30 minutes in my experience with no prior knowledge of anything. Good Luck and there will be loads of assistance on here if you need it but remember to search the forum first as there are hundreds of repeat questions and most are covered in the docs. The most common question is "this rom or that rom will not work...why?"
If you have that question you could read: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Arcade/ if you are planning on playing arcade games.
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
