FBA vs. MAME
-
@barbudreadmon Yes, still Gyruss. I'm not having any retroarch mappings in either the fba or arcade folder. Only the one in the all folder..
-
You also gotta keep in mind with regards to FBA the MAME code the drivers are built from is newer in some cases bang upto date, although game support
and performance are important keep in mind alotta games are better emulated in FBA vs older MAME for example protection simulation code vs proper
dumps of the Protection MCU chips and data, Bubble Bobble springs to mind the enemy movements and logic for example will be totally wrong in older
MAME but 100% correct in FBA something to consider ;)Not sure if you guys have an Raine port..?? but that would open up a whole new catagory around performance as with some games that emulator
beats all others hands down :) -

What's your exact version of lr-fbalpha ?
-
@barbudreadmon Just updated yesterday, so I guess it would be 0.2.97.42 like the romset, the game's from.

Could anyone test Gunbird and Gunbird 2?

I'm experiencing a lot of stuttering in graphics and sound on both MAME2003 and FBA...Both games run at full speed with fba on my pi3@1.3Ghz, for gunbird2 you need to enable the speedhack in the dipswitches.
Gyruss fire button is properly mapped to retropad B.Give some information on your setup (rpi version ? overclocked ? fba version ? controllers you are using ? autoconfig ? mapped manually ? ... ), and perhaps we'll be able to help.

Good to know, thanks. Will add these tips in the global "best core" xls file.

@barbudreadmon Once you have updated FBA and Mame2003, what's the best way to check what version the emulator is once installed?

You can see the exact version of the running core at the bottom left of the retroarch menu
-
@barbudreadmon Of course. Thanks!

I caught one more rom that was in FBA that is better suited for MAME: Ms. Pacman.
-
@pussyfoot you mean Mame2003?
-
@greenhawk84 Yes. If you go through my lists, Ms Pacman appears on the FBA list. I moved it to MAME2003.
-
In my opinion, mame is better if you have the right combo of emulator+rom, what is hard to match sometimes. FBA is way more compatible than Mame, when Mame focus on perfection.
-
@danielmewhouse Except mame2003 is from 2003 and fba is from a few months ago. The emulation is a decade+ newer. Fba is my main emulator unless a game runs slow or it's not supported.
-
mame2003 is more reference to the romset from that era these days. The emulator is still actively developed making new games compatible with it.
mame2003 is good, because you just need the mame2003 romset and has alot of compatible roms. The romset doesn't need to be updated or change like other rom sets.
Meanwhile you can benifit from all the changes they make to the mame2003 emulator fork for retropie :)
-
@danielmewhouse FBA team is mainly interested in the final result, MAME team is mainly interested in following the "official recipe". I wouldn't say current MAME is more "perfect" than current FBA, on some games the final result in current FBA is clearly better, sometimes they even hack around to fix a bug present in the rom (which is something MAME won't do due to its policy)
I think @gamez-fan posted a list of games that are better in fba not long ago. -

Do you mean retroarch core FBA, right? I use FBA since 2000 as standalone emulator for Windows. Was an emulators war between Mame, FBA and WinKawaks. The most near perfect to a real arcade was Mame, when WinKawaks and FBA was easier to manage. The problem with romsets is: if I don't wanna get the full romset, is hard to find the right rom alone for Mame. Talking about Mame, I'm experiencing a weird issue: Mame 2010 doesn't save modifications on games service menu, like free play feature. On 2003 this bug doesn't occur, but some games like Marvel vs Capcom doesn't work with Mame 2003.
-
@danielmewhouse Right, we're talking about right now and what the pi can run. I know the history. I've been using emulators since 98 or something. As of right now available for the pi, fba has more advanced emulation than mame2003. I have a pi2 and pi3 and I make sure the games run fullspeed on my oc'd pi2 first. The accuracy will require more power, and that's when I resort to mame2003. It depends on the game.
Oh, getting complete romsets is so simple these days with a quick google search, it's less hassle to get the whole set and later dig through it to get the games I want.

This morning I found a website that provided the right roms for mame2003 individually, and actually works!!! š Even Super Street Fighter 2 turbo worked!!! This game is my "Eleanor" (like Nicholas Cage's 60 seconds movie). Every time I try this game, or it's incompatible with the emulator, or the game speed and difficult adjustment just doesn't works. The game stills faster than Flash and harder as hell š
