Roms using retro arch or mame?

Hi all

I am brand new to the world of the raspberry pi and its emulation power. Im making an arcade for my son out of an old snes.

I used a recent simply austin nes mini image (i plan to convert the theme to snes once its all done).

Things were seemingly going smoothly till i got to "arcade". I have a few question and have read the faq and guidelines.

I have dumped a number of mame roms into the arcade directory. They appear fine however some load in mame and some load in final burn alpha.

what dictates whether a rom loads in mame or fba? Cant i have al load under the same emulator?
many many games try to load but just dont?
fba games actually load great with a nice overlay however they never reset. so for instance if i have quit mid game then whenever i reload that game it doesnt start from fresh but where i was last time. Ive been through all the fba settings and try to tweak saving options but doesnt work.
the mame games almost have the oposite problem!!! Dont load with an overlay but start fresh each time. I go into settings and apply the nice over lay but it doesnt keep its settings.
killer instinct!!! Haha i was on the good ol gamesmaster show when a kid and want my son to attempt what i could do. Is it running yet?

Hello, the best place to start if you are just starting off is with https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first because I think you have not yet read this. Most of your questions have already been answered many times and the documents regarding Arcade answer them clearly. Your question 2 is easy to solve but again, a quick search on here will reveal to you that you are trying to launch a rom which is not compatible with your emulator of choice. You must read this. You cannot have one emulator launch all the roms. An emulator requires a specific set of roms to function. There are many versions of MAME for example. A MAME rom may or may not work on any given emulator. It is not trial and error though, it is exact. Get the correct romset - lr-mame2003 requires a verified 0.78 set and the roms will launch. The runcommand is what you use to achieve the illusion that all roms are launching in "arcade".

Also, point 5 in the https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first is really important. To get support with a 3rd party image, you should ask the creator as nobody here can predict how it is set up.

Hi guys thanks for getting back to me. Well. I honestly had read up but seems ive missed a few things.

In my years of emulators (on windows) ive never had a time when some arcade roms need one emulator and another needed a different kind (talking arcade only here btw). They all used to simply run under mame. Now it seems some arcade games will run under mame. And others use this new (to me) final burn alpha thing. What is telling my games to load in one or the other?? Its frustrating.

I get the rome pack is why many arent working so thanks will grab that and hope that crosses one prob off my list.

Ill have another read up and search but if i cant find it ill have to kindly ask again as ive nowhere else to turn.

That is nonsense. MAME has always been tied to a specific ROM set to match the emulator. As has FBA.
You need to decide which "Arcade" emulator you want to use then obtain the appropriate ROM set designed for that emulator.

It isnt nonsense. Ive never Been forced to use anything but mame to run ANY arcade rom.....Ever. (On windows). You can talk versions this,versions that but thats the way it is. One emulator - any arcade game.

Simply austins stuff is quite good so id be suprised if he has messed much, if any of it up. However one mans meat and all.... and i would rather change some configs. Thats where you guys come in. Or dont perhaps :)

Matey above helped re: the run command. That could help me go through each individual rom and make it load in fba rather than mame. But going through each rom could be annoying rather than a single worldwide change.

There's your problem right there. Third party images are not supported on this forum. You should go ask Simply Austin.

You don't need to go through everyone. A full 0.78 set works by default in lr-mame2003 and in the run command you can even select the default for ALL roms then tweak away the few you want.

Thanks for your help anyway its put me on track to defo cure a few issues i have. I'll stumble over the rest.

Just something i need to instill and make you better people (the regulars in here) that years ago i wouldve loved to spend time reading and learning exactly how to do something unfortunately now with kids and a demanding wife i dont as much care for the "how to" but rather "just get the end result done". I think you need to realise and appreciate that theres no problem with that. The aim is to play games with my son on an old snes. I really dont care too much for the hows.... and thats actually ok 😀

4. If using a Raspberry Pi - make sure you have a sufficient Power Supply / power cable. Many issues are related to having a poor PSU - see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Overclocking/#power-supply

5.Make sure you are using an official image, or have done a manual install yourself. We will not support 3rd party images.

In order to get the end result, you simply need to read the instructions. Which version of MAME did you say you were running? Abrasive nature of this place? Nice. The thing is, docs have been written to prevent people from needing to ask these quite basic questions. You would say not basic. But once you read, you would go ahhhhhhhhhh. Your comment translates to"Hey guys, I cannot be bothered to read. I need a result now with this issue, go through your docs and paste the answer here right now for me to read". My answer of 14 hours ago was a polite as you could ever get and within it are all your answers. Also, one could argue that you have now had support with your 3rd party image that isn't supported. Had you read what you agreed to read when you signed up, you wouldn't have wasted your time posting in the first place, you would have asked Austin.

@floodie The Arcade part is responsible for a lot of questions asked here in the forums and most of the answers are found with a quick read in the docs. That - and the fact that you're using a 3rd party image but you ask for support in the RetroPie forums is what might have caused a little 'abrasiveness'.

See the table in https://retropie.org.uk/docs/MAME/ for which folder is used by each emulator.
You're using the wrong rom probably.
That's what you should ask the seller of the image, RetroPie doesn't come with any overlays by default.
We can't tell which 'mame' games are you referring. As people mentioned, there are a few Mame emulators used in RetroPie and it's hard to understand which one you're using and why the settings don't persist.
The Arcade compatibility list is linked from the page I mentioned above.
