How many bluetooth controlles can I connect to the onboard bluetooth chip at one time? Do I need an external dongle if I want to use them for multi-player?

@jokerfmj I can't give you a hard number. Though I have read up to seven devices. This being said..My Opinion?

Get WIRED controllers for anything higher than four players, If you max out the bluetooth stack you are more than likely going to increase input lag. Just an educated guess there no solid evidence. So yes you would need a USB dongle but that is more "stress" on the pi and more things can go wrong. (Off the top of my head interfering channels or something.)

Problem one: If it can only hold seven devices then you are out of luck.
Max you can use on RetroPie is for the play station at eight people.

Second problem. Only four USB ports on the pi.
Ok well the majority of the games are five players max. So use one blue tooth and the rest wired..or two blue tooth and the rest wired..or four blue tooth and the rest wired. Or get a cheap non-powered USB hub. Or if you want to connect a hard drive to the pi get a powered USB hub (just make sure you get the correct one.) (Example)

        Problems solved :D

More info about bluetooth on wikipeida.

People want things easy...but then complain that life is boring...
