*SOLVED* [Help Retropie 4.3] Some MAME2003 roms not working after update
-
@matchaman Yup I can confirm that is the case. Hmm I wonder what else I am missing. The same roms are still crashing, but on a clean 4.3 image they are fine. No other files need to be replaced?
-
It's possible that the games have created save/record files that are incompatible with the (slightly) older core. They are located in your ROMs folder and they usually feature ROM names but not .zip extensions.
romname.fs
romname.hi^------- typical examples. Also remove any .cfg files of the afore in case they force some unknown option.
-
@matchaman Yup removed all that. Still not working. I just popped in my other sd card with a fresh 4.3 image and some of the problematic roms. They work fine. I can confirm the base 4.3 image is 'MAME 2003 0.78 cb4826a' as well.
What could be the dam problem? It only start happening after I updated Mame2003.
-
That's really strange. I just tried those ROMs and they work fine on my setup, using the core file I shared.
Maybe it has to do with some other update (driver maybe?)...
A real head scratcher this one! :/
-
@matchaman Sure is! Bugging the hell out of me. I have a few more ideas then I will just do a fresh 4.3 install.
-
Try updating runcommand. If it doesn't help, replace the text in /opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh with this (mine which works fine):
-
@matchaman I've replaced the runcommand data and rebooting now.
Some games will launch though, then crash a few seconds after. Others crash right away. Testing now!
-
@matchaman STILL NO DICE. Bugger this. At this stage it is not worth the effort. I am just going to do a fresh 4.3 install.
I have the process down at this stage so it doesn't take that long to do these days.
-
I don't know what's the issue here but i'm 99.9% sure it's unrelated to @gamez-fan 's fixes, all the games mentioned here work totally fine with the latest mame2003-libretro commit for me.
-
Yeah a few people on here seemed all too quick to lay the blame at my door :) anyway no matter i have added all the code changes i made to
a ole MAME76 core and for good measure a MAME72 core also and what'ya know both builds fully compile with not one single error or warning
from any of my code additions so i can only conclude the problems reported here are being caused by something else -
@barbudreadmon Ok I updated my other SD card with a 4.3 fresh image with the latest mame2003 and it works fine for all the games I've had issue with.
Goddammit. What could my issue be then.
@gamez-fan Yeah sorry man. You update then put a basic two and two together and blame the update :P
Whatever I have done though surely must be fixable. I'm trying to think what's different in my setup vs my other fresh install I have. Other than a few core remap configs and controllers I use, it should all be the same. I'd love to get to the bottom of this!
-
45 posts later. And the help of all you kind community members putting up with my testing, I have found the issue: it was the core remap file I had created for mame2003.
I removed it, cause it was the only other thing being loaded when a rom was loaded, and now all my roms work. Idk maybe it was corrupt. I will try create it properly again and see if that fixes it.
@gamez-fan sorry for wasting your time man, hopefully you didn't waste too much time testing.

It's alright buddy via the testing i've just found out that i've broke every Sega 16 / 18 game ha ha time to revert those changes!!.
-
@gamez-fan Ok good to know haha
Also sort of related, but I've somehow got the fancy looking PC based retroarch GUI on for mame2003. Not sure how I changed it. How do I change it back to regular retroarch? The simple and fast based on.
-
Ignore me again, I have fixed it. Man am I having some learning experiences today.
-
Glad it's all solved :)
The different GUI can be changed in the drivers settings and only RGUI is recommended for RPi.
-
@matchaman Yup thanks f or that. Found the option.
Some mod can mark this topic as solved now. All is well on my end.
-
@mrjordaaany which core remap specifically? the path? i'm having similar issues on mame2003 build e1aa112 (kinda). specifically with nbajam.zip and nbajamte.zip ... but in these cases the games launch ok but the sound effects are missing/replaced with repeated announcer sounds. so strange. i have another build that has mambe2003 build cb4826a and those same roms work fine. @gamez-fan any idea what would make the sounds go wonky like that or just make some sound effects not play?
-
i ended up rolling back to the cb4826a build https://www.dropbox.com/s/smbzkl7ccleytth/mame2003_libretro.rar provided by matchaman above and that fixed the sound glitches. even the newest e34c87f commit still had sound glitches in nbajamte.zip... but e34c87f does seem to fix nbajam.zip sound
-
@mrsco Yeah I think that is unrelated from my issue. There are issues logged on github right now for games like mortal combat where there are sound glitches for the announcer just repeating words over and over again: https://github.com/libretro/mame2003-libretro/issues/195
And thats for the latest build. I'd say thats the same issue in your case. So the fix would be the thing you have already done, roll back for now.
