Retropie keeps my screen on 24/7

So I recently set up a new retropie on my entertainment center. I cannot figure out a way to have it "sleep" the TV when not in use.
It will see some general use from a few kids and other absent minded people who will play a game then walk away or leave. I don't want my TV on all the time.
All I want is a simple display timeout when the PS3 controller has disconnected, and for it to turn back on when the controller comes back.
I understand the Pi has no real "sleep" mode, and given the cost of leaving one running 24/7 for a month is close to $.50, that's not a big deal.
I do not want my TV running 24/7 though.
I'm looking for any solution that allows me to treat the Retropie like any other modern device...walk away and let it "time out" on its own.
I would love some input on how to go about doing this. -
@darkus I have the RPI system 24/7, but I don't have this problem. The TV turns off the screen after about 1h (2h maybe). I have the screensaver/power options active in EmulationStation, if that makes a difference.
One thing to try is to move the HDMI PI cable to a different TV port - if you have more than 1. Mine is set HDMI2, which is labeled PC, and has the Game mode active.
